84 Brakes - Triumph? Other?

Recommended Posts

Brake Gurus...where are the front Brake Calipers and Discs off of originally, on the 84 Esprits?

Just picked up a set of front discs and they arrived and were completely wrong..not even close... had to argue my way to get them returned...not very hard....but frustrating as I thought these were the 'easy ones to find'..heh. Now the shop says 'cant get them'. I was thinking these things were GT6 based... I'm getting ready to go through my calipers/master as well, so i'm trying to understand what i'm looking for a little better, as I'm getting a lot of those 'Who makes Lotus' responses from parts shops that probably have what I need, but just not a good cross reference...

Thanks!

Pete

I think the Europa are the same as the Gt6 (from memory), and I thought the fronts of the early Esprits were corrected, it looks like Esprits aren't, has your esprit had discs changed to a different type by any chance?. Triumph were smaller (245mm)

Are they still the same calipers as the Triumph or are those different as well?

What size are your current Esprit discs?

Just checked the EBC site, it lists fronts as 13mm thick (new) and 262mm diameter, which seems about right. EBC part no D213

I brought some discs from my local Lotus specialist on Thursday, they were pattern ones which looked good.

Took them back Saturday as they foul the caliper mount/hub and lock up solid when trying to set backlash/endfloat.

Its not very clear, but you can see the marking where the new disc was rubbing/locking up on the inside of the recess area.

Yeah, there's definitely a tie-in with the GT6 and the Europa...I believe the Twin Cam/Twin Cam Specials used the GT6 front suspension entirely...been a while since I was in the midst of that cross reference fun :)

Dodgy - what part number replacements did you have that didn't work?

They were the Non Lotus alternatives to the Lotus discs (lotus ones not available) that the local specialist has never had a problem with before. pt num jbdf075

I got a pair of pattern front discs (for my old '82 S3) from pnm and I had the same problem with them as Dodgy. They were the first set he had sold from a new batch and Pete swapped them over straight away with a re-machined pair (he got a courier to pick them up/drop them of).

Of cource I went and crashed the car before I got them fitted, so they are still sitting in a box in the garage...

Hmm...so no idea if these are Spitfire or GT6 related? They can't be custom...

Upright, trunion and axle is GT6 which is slightly thicker than the spitfire part.

The hub is 5 bolts on my 84 Esprit, not 4 like the spitfire and GT6.

I could never find another car that the solid esprit discs were used on...I got close with a jag rotor but the holes were in the wrong spot and not enough of them (4)..and that was with a lot of looking.

...yep. custom...just like the rear discs.
