That is lotus esprit restorataion for you. !   once you start to take things apart and start to delve into the belly of the beast it not only becomes more work but also more money lol.  But that is always the way with restorations and considering how rare these are i think we have all been very lucky thus far on spare part prices within reason imo. :)

    One thing i always remember at the back of my mind when working on these cars is thank god they are fiberglass, Just imagine having to deal with rust on the body also.!  That metal trim that goes under the rear quarter glass is enough to contend with on the esprit body and needs re painting every year.:P

    Glad its all going back together well.   :thumbup:

  2. Hi Dave,    It is a post called  S2 gearbox rebuild, the poster is Daniel on here.  Just put that in the search engine on here as i cant post links :blush:

    But the name of the firm they speak of is called  Allen Voigts gearboxes.  Worth giving him a shout to see what the damage to your pocket would be for giving the gearbox a once over. :thumbup:   I  am sure other members will come up with some other places they have used and recommend also hopefully .:yes:

You could always put silicone sealant on the washer under the car, or as you have said put a rubber washer.  To be honest i think they rust more because the esprit after a few years when the door seals etc start to go, water gets in and it sits at the lowest point, given the runners sit directly on the floor all the way down to make the seats as low as possible they are just prone to rust, thats why they make such a mess of light coloured carpets with that horrible rust stain. !

    I have the same problem as an aftermarket sunroof was fitted in mine also. Maybe in the 80s they looked cool but now i personally think they look terrible especially due to the small size and large round edges of those webasto type sunroofs that do not fit the esprits square profile.:thumbdown:

    Few options to consider,   Matt on these forums swears by replacing the whole roof as he says he finds its easier as to line the open hole with fiberglass is near impossible to hide the repair as no matter how hard you try its always visable, I think he gets hold of used roofs that can be picked up for around 150 quid and cuts of at A posts and B posts and bonds on.   A lot of work but you are guaranteed a clean finish as to repairing the hole is difficult due to the esprit roof been a strange contour and not just flat it slopes. :) 

    One of the members on here fitted an aftermarket roof that was pretty large and looked really nice, only downside to this is the glass roof slid all the way back, so if you needed to lift the tailgate in an emergency you are knackered. Also not cheap 4 to 5 hundred quid. I cant remember which member it was on here but it was a yellow s3 esprit, hopefully they will pop a picture up. 

    You could always fit the actual lotus sunroof, downside this involves fitting a whole new fiberglass roof section as in the first paragraph and secondly the glass panels are now as rare as hens teeth and normally change hands for about 600 quid. 

    I am some where between these 2 methods at the moment, I removed my aftermarket roof and cut the hole out even larger .!  My theory is that when people try to glass just the small sunroof hole the area is harder to hide the repair as it is bang on in the middle of a big roof section.  What i am going to try and do is cut right out to the edges as far as possible and fiberglass it.  My body shell is off at the moment so i also have the opertunity to turn the car upside down, use thin alloy sheet on the outside and gel coat and glass from the inside. If this fails to give me the finished result i am after i will cut the roof off and try Matts way.   

    Lots of different options to think about Dave, some expensive but all very labour intensive.!  Hopefully people who have tried these options will post up their trials and tribulations on the matter.:)

Great job on getting the lump out,  Regarding the hiring of an A frame..  can you not just sit the rear end of the car litterally down on its chassis at the back with the wheels removed, and also looking at your picture can the chain not be ajusted on the engine hoist to give more height, if not bolt some of those excess links in the chain together.  Good luck with the belts and so on. 

    Regarding the gearbox one of the fellows on here the other day mentioned a decent firm opposite pnm engineering, so may be worth chasing that up as you could just drop your box with him and you never no it may need nothing but a least a specialist can open it up and see if it need surgery or not, if not only for your piece of mind. as a recon box is not cheap and these boxes are normally pretty good. :)

Could not agree more about the interior been removed from the car make it looks a sight for sore eyes lol.  I put doing mine of for so long, when i go the car i just used a dash spray paint to spruce up the car as it was a rolling restoration, but once they have past the point of no return a retrim is the the only way to go.  Stripped mine out last year and re trimmed myself and could not be more happier with the result it makes such a difference and makes the cockpit so much mor eof a nice place to be.   Your wiring loom look extremely tidy i have to say.!   Stainless screws are the way ahead also.

    Look forward to some more pictures and intrested to see how you get the sun visors done as i still need to do mine. 

    Your fiberglass trim in the drivers footwell is that the part from directly by the windscreen......
