What is the wastegate, where is it located and how do I adjust it to get more boost? Also what is a safe boost level for this car? I have a 1997 Lotus Esprit V8

Fill out your profile..........

The waste gate is a diaphragm looking thing that is attached to the turbo(s) with a rod hooked to it, you can adjust for more boost by means of an upgraded chip in your puter, or a turbo boost control valve............

Most here like the chip, as it is safer and more reliable than a boost controller..

Hi,

The V8 wastegates are both set to exactly 0.35-0.4 bar mechanical boost pressure. This pressure is the point where the ECU takes over and allows more or less boost (= depending on engine sensor parameters) up to max. 0.75 bar. This is done by the ECU via electronic solenoid.

If you just crank up the mechanical wastgate setting you will fool the ECU and you will "disturb" the proper ECU-boost-control function.

If you like to run a higher boost in lower gears you should upgrade to the High Torque ECU.

If you also like to raise max. boost in higher gears and high rpms you should install the Red race ECU. This will give you boost up to 0.9-1.0 bar.

If you like you may have a look here: http://freudhoefer.de/lotus/esprit/products/chips/v8.htm

Kenneth,

what you are saying here is true for many automobiles, but not for the Esprit. The Esprit does not have a only-mechanical-controlled boost system - its more complicated with the Esprit.

With cranking up the boost by shortening the wastegate rods you will simply fool the ECU. The same is true for just instaling a boost controller.

The Esprit already has a "boost controller" installed that is controlled via ECU. If you add another one you will disturb a "closed loop" system.

The only way to do it proper and safe (up to 1 bar boost) is to install a new ECU/program/chip and make sure that the wastegate capsules itself will hold tight with high boost (= the stock capsules are known for being a bit weak with boost pressures 0.7+ bar)

Cheers
