Gearbox replacement

Anyone had one of the reconed gearboxes from Lotusbits?

My gearbox has been "rebuilt" twice in the last 5 years with no use in between.

There is no positive gear engagement and I kind of have to guess where the gears are. 

Cost of a reconditioned one is £1k ex vat but am unsure how much the Labour would be on top of that.

It is! I could live with it but surely that's not how the gearbox should feel.

Gosh that is a lot. A few year ago now I got a getrag box for £1200 which seems like a good deal now! To be fair though voights quoted me £1400 to refurb an S1 5 speed box and these were always marginal with the power. If they are refurbing by taking the best of the bits they have then life would be limited i guess.

I'm certainly no expert (have an auto!) but it sounds like the problem could be in the selector mechanism rather than the box itself. The gearlever should sit in some kind of cup and these often wear out or disintegrate.

That sounds like a cheaper fix! I'll look in to that.

Are you sure the gear lever has been inserted correctly. If the box isn't left in 2nd or 4th prior to the gear lever being removed from the box and the box being removed from the car, it's quit possible that the gear lever has been refitted in the wrong position.

I had the same problem on my Eclat. I agree with Richard -  @rjwooll.  My gearlever was slopping about all over the place. The gear lever sits in a plastic 'slot'. (Richards cup). Mine had broken. I got it replaced at a Ford dealership.(although that was many years ago).

Well I lost 5th gear on the a12 today which was fun.
