Petrol Cap

Recommended Posts

Hi all, Need a little help already!

The short story - I've lost my petrol cap.

The longer story.. Involves me breaking the barrel from the cap, putting it back together to go to work and then driving round a corner to fast. I've managed to recover everything apart from the barrel which is probably in a field somewhere.

I've not heard back from the Lotus dealer I called, will they be able to replace the barrel to match my key? The guy I spoke to didn't seem to think so, surely that's not the case? It was suggested I might have to change all the locks!

Thanks fellas, I've gone past the sticky stage though, The key wouldn't come out after first fill up, tiny bit of force and it fell apart. Loosing the barrel was my own stupidity though, should have left it in my pocket. Its been a couple of days now, will chase the dealer up tomorrow and see what he has learned.

I was collecting my exige on wednesday, driving it home 900km, on Corsa tires, in -10C and when I was going to refuel Fuel cap broke. I read that its common issue. Is there any solution? In mine only Black part is broken

My fuel cap was also broken in 2017. My dealer gave me two options:

1. replacing all (!) locks on warranty because Lotus key numbers are absolutely useless !!!! That's a fact, I already had a broken door lock 2015 and Lotus had to replace all locks, fuel cap, two keys, ignition lock... on warranty for around 1.000 Euros. Very clever Lotus ;)

2. Get a new fuel cap on warranty with a separate key. Then find a locksmith to adjust the tumblers to match your old key.

> But I contacted the Lotus customer service, sent my second key from Germany to Hethel and got a fitting new fuel cap and my key back, all within one week. They simply did what a locksmith does but need the original key.

Beside the sensless Lotus key numbers and the poor quality of the locks this was awesome. If I remember right Lotus has a better/newer version of the fuel caps since around 2017.

Thanks Peter, I may do the same then. I had spoken to a dealer and he was going to send me a barrel that I would have to get sorted by a locksmith, but my petrol cap is still in pieces so this seems like a much better option. Was going to ask what they charged you, but I assume it was under warrenty?

If you don't mind buying a spare cap into the deal, this might be an option...

I'd offer to print you a new part in nylon, but I doubt it would be strong enough to last.

Everyone thanks for info.

My friend who has 3D printer sent me spare parts. We fixed inner part with screw. Works brilliant.

We are working on more things, lowering rails etc. Stay tuned 🙂

My fuel cap arrived today, perfect fit.
Cannot thank Neil Turner @ Lotus enough, I have the updated cap matched to my key. Perfect excuse to go fill the tank, took the scenic route. 😁
