Engine limited to 5000rpm (276bhp NA)

Sorry if this is a known issue and covered before but I could not find anything on a quick search. If I cruise at 70mph or thereabouts in 6th gear for more than a few miles, my 2010 Evora NA limits itself to 5000rpm with all the rev limiter lights (3 red lights) coming on as it approaches 5000rpm. The engine will not go over 5000rpm as I drop down the gears.

If I turn off the engine and wait for 60 seconds and restart, all is fine. A pain, as I cannot turn the engine off (or rather, I will not) on the motorway, so I have to peel off, stop and re-join.

B&C are not aware of other cars having this issue. My car is not showing any faults when B&C plug it in, so B&C appear to have no answer. This has been an issue from when I bought the car (March 2018) but I do not often sit in 6th gear so it is not something I regularly encounter. It happened today as I cruised on the M3 and on the way back on the A3, so I would like to find a fix.

If the rev lights come on @5k then this tells you that the car is in limp mode.  It is at this moment that you need to read the error codes.  They will be there IMO as it's due to these fault codes that the ECU is cutting power.

This is what I assumed but Bell & Colvill say no error codes showing.

Could it be the engine coolant sensor on its way out, so thinking the engine is cold so reducing the revs?

Thanks. I will mention to B&C.

What does the watertemp read when it's cutting power?

All normal; the temperature gauge is a scale not a figure but I am pretty watchful of gauges and no noticeable movement, up or down.

I will double check on the next occurrence, as I hope to record it to show B&C.

And sorry Kristof, I have re-read your first post and you say to test the ECU with the fault there. So I may do just that and get to B&C with the fault still in play. But when I turn off the engine, it will go so they will need to test it running.

I think the posts above about coolant may be on to something....

A couple guys over here had a similar 4500-5000RPM limit. No CEL/or service lights, and the temperature appeared normal. However, a thorough check revealed they were slightly low on coolant.

Once topped off, they had no further issues. One also replaced the overflow tank cap (Toyota part #16475-28140) as he felt he was losing pressure/coolant from there. Interestingly, the Toyota service advisor he bought the cap from stated that the caps should be replaced every 2 years.

I checked my coolant level and all fine, smack on full. B&C will have another look.

B&C think they have fixed this. They plugged in, drove the car, found the same fault and with the computer giving data they could analyse the info, even though no error code showing. Exhaust actuator (?) is the culprit. I collect tomorrow, so we will see.

All season tyres also fitted, probably a huge mistake but I will give it a go. At least legal for Germany now.

All good on a run today; 6th gear for some miles and no more 'limp' mode/revs limited to 5000rpm once I changed down. So perhaps we have an answer to this issue. Exhaust actuator fault.
