Wanted Delco Moraine ABS III master and/or pumpassembly

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm still looking for a broken (most are 1f609.png😉 ) Delco Moraine mastercylinder (ABS III) as found in SE, SE Highwing, S4, S4S, and GT3.
An estimation is that approx 70% of the systems is not working correctly (poll Norwegian Lotus Forum), so I'm adressing myself especially to people who placed already an alternatif (like the one from Barry or Ian), and wants to get rid of these bad memories...
If you want to know whether your system has the problem: the car brakes bad, the pedal pushes back while braking, and when you depressurize, and open the cover, you will see an airy mixture of oil and air (photo 2)
I do not want to take out mine, since my car would then be completely out of service and i have this opinion even stronger now, since a first attempt went wrong on a 2nd unit I was able to buy 1f641.png😞
Yes, i also still suspect the pump.

Wanted to pay a very reasonable price.

After depressurising I believe it always is a bit foamy when opening the reservoir.

@ChillidoggyI'm interested in any pressure switches you might have. But I also might be installing your ABS deletion kit this year depending on how things go :)

Sorry, as I generally supply the kits rather than fit them, I don’t have old Delco parts spare, and I sold mine years ago. I only mentioned it because Karl was looking for one, and I was fairly sure I knew someone who had a spare.

If you want a kit, then you’d better let me know if you want to go on the list. There are some spaces left, although I’m not expecting the next batch to be ready for a few weeks yet.

Hi Vanya,

The foam has nothing to do with the pressure switch. If the pressure switch fails, the pump will run continuously, or not al all. In the last case you will have no foam, so I guess it is running all the time?

I can get you a pressure switch replacement, but not very fast.

The foamy / milky look of the brake fluid after de-pressurising the system is due to it containing small air bubbles and it is a result of it not being bled properly. In order to remove the air from the accumulator and pump the system needs to be de-pressurised and pressurised several times. Between de-pressurisation and pressurisation you need to wait until the air has dispersed out of the brake fluid (I have found the 2 minutes stated in the service notes to be completely unrealistic). This process can take quite a while which is why you find a lot of people do not bleed the system properly.

Sailorbob,

Yes Indeed, I learned. If it is still ok after 4 months, (no air and good braking) than the bleeding and the system are ok. If after 4 weeks to 4 months there is again air in the system, the bleeding was ok, but the system (pump and/or master) sucks air somewhere. Take a look at the article and hope you recognise things. Feedback mostly welcomed.

Even after replacing the accumulator I have not seen brake fluid contaminated with that amount of air. I am surprised that there is no obvious leak of brake fluid where the air is getting in. One possible source of the air that would not reveal itself as a leak would be if it is nitrogen from the accumulator and eventually the accumulator precharge will be lost.
