Installing rear view camera

Recommended Posts

Got a new headunit on way that accepts rear view cameras.

Any one got one fitted and any tips?

My rear sensors on my 380 are bloody useless, seem to beep when ever they want. Plus would be nice to actually have a view out back when going backwards.

Yep, see my how do thread here:

Tips are measure many times, drill once :)

Isolate power and switch through a relay. More tips in my main build thread also

What head unit have you purchased?

Getting there getting the power cable through to the front hatch was a ballache.

Initailly couldn’t get through the grommet then fishing cable a ballache and motorsport damper corvering half of a tiny exit hole.

Worried I had damaged a cable when getting through Gromit from passenger side to front as as had to push quite hard.

So refitted driver seat quickly and started car and all seemed to run fine and every thing worked lights wise etc.

So will connect power and new stereo up after work tmrw.

Hi Raf. Thanks for taking this little lot off my hands.

Just noticed this thread, so read the pm I’ve just sent with that in mind.

Looks like you’re well advanced with the install but feel free to pester me if you need anything.

K.

Interesting thread. When I looked to fit rear speakers the sound deadening in the car came right upto the back of the speaker blanking plate. Did you cut it out or was it not presenta?

thanks

It’s proving to be a PITA to be honest.

The head unit is the hardest bit (getting all wires to in and then all the extra in an impossibly small space) going to have another try on Friday after work.

The rear speakers were tight but squeezed in (just).

Will post up loads of picks when (if!) done. Hopefully a few more hours of cussing and wishing I never started will see it finished 😂

With the head unit take out the cage so you can squeeze your hand in, push all the looms behind the clocks, assuming the RCA and camera signal are long enough you can push them all to one side behind there (there's quite a bit of room, then when they are hanging out by about 6 inches mount the tuner box.

When mounting the tuner box put the cage on the headhunt so you can get it mounted. Put the tuner in with dab arial/splitter (if you can wrap the tuner box in anti rattle tape) then rest the head unit on the dash with the single tuner box connecter. Pull the cage along it, mount that in the dash, then slowly push the cables toward the drivers side of the dash, and with a bit of wiggling it goes in.

If you still can't make it fit. Remove the shroud, stack cover and unscrew the clocks. Cover the clocks and rest it on the steering wheel. Now at the loom mount a couple of pieces of string, poke those out of the hole for the clocks. Slowly pull the look into the dash via the strings and it will suck itself in there. Then just pop the headhunt whilst pulling the cable out the way from behind.

Or removethe dash and lay it out behind the clocks

Don't forget the handbrake trigger (either relay or switch) otherwise you can't use it one the move.

You should have about 2cm of space directly behind the headhunt, so really it needs to be pulled out behind the clocks on the drivers side.

So it’s all in hurrah and it starts again double hurrah and all appears to work with no warning lights!! But there a big issue the bloody stereo screen folds out and gets stuck on the indicator stalk.

It will only open an miss it only if I indicate right and put full beam on 😳

@KJD fitted with the 10 mm spacer as suggested (had to sand corners of frame to get it in but pushed right to back).

Are you sure it fitted ok in yours as I can see no possible way it will not snag unless I do the above. Which is already annoying so would be impossible to live with.

Ah looking at online and KJD old thread guessing I need to get it open that way and set screen to stay open all the time.

Will try tmrw and report back. Oh and for anyone guessing you need DAB tuner box connected even if not using it as comes up with error otherwise.

I am sure there is a workaround to trim / cut the indicator stalk, which enables the stereo to fold in and out without it catching. @MrP_ I am sure done a write up but I can’t locate the thread.

Looking forward to the pictures of the final install.

Yep, it’s annoying but I just left the screen up all the time unless I parked somewhere iffy.

You can set it to stay up in the menu.

I’ve posted this pic before. Indicate right and push up slightly on the stalk and it clears.

Pretty sure MrP shortened his cos he’s clever like that!

It’s obviously a lot easier to cut down if you don’t have cruise control.

Cheers all ta yep I’ll do the same ref leaving out. Can totally live with that.

Mine has cruise and tbh i am now done with dicking around with the car now 😂 Had a few heart stopping moments in that process and don’t want any more. I was shitting myself it wouldn’t start again and or electrical gremlins post install.

Touch wood all appears fine!

Didn't do a guide, cost I did it late at night. The procedure is the same with or without cruise as the cruise is just a small loom outside of the stalk, not inside it.

Just remove the stalk from the car, cut it at the bottom near the switch, take out about a cm (borrowed pic but I wrote on, but gives you the gist).

spacer.png

Then drill the core of the stalk to dowel it. Epoxy it back up together and that's it.

Leave to cure for about 24 hours.

Alternative steps:

1.Get so excited at you achievements you only leave it to cure for about 30 mins, fit it, snap it then get all depressed

2. Leave it to cure 24 hours, excitedly fit it, then realise it's about 1mm too long so still fouls it. Pull it all apart again, cut it, shave of another 1mm then refit, repeat optional step 2 at this point for maximum effect

Top man ta. I’ll go with the leaving it open been into settings and it works

Had to connect up DAB connector first and was easy in end.

However now I can test sound now I am into stereo.

Front speakers work fine 👍🏻

Rear speakers no sound (been in and played with balance no dice). I used wires already there so should work jut by being hooked up?

Rear sub has power but no sound. Checked all settings and can’t see anything obvious.

Any ideas anyone? So close yet so far 😀

How did you wire the sub? Presume you have used the sub out via RCA and then into the loom of the sub? Check you have sub set to on in the audio settings screen, otherwise you are not sending a signal.

Same for the rears.

Also go yo listening position and make sure you are OK there

Go to speaker level (not just fader) and modify the DB levels there, they changes to speaker levels are in addition to the fader, so play away

Failing that, go to factory reset just to be sure!

Pics to follow when all tidied up.
