OBD2 compatible with the Exige

Recommended Posts

Decided to try Harrys Lap Timer PetrolHead and would like an OBD2 reader that works with iOS.

Any recommendations on what works and is a tried and tested solution - some like the kiwi seem to be a bit fragile.

In terms of fitting is this simple or best left to a dealer?

I've had good results with a Vgate OBD2 reader for Android, I believe their iOS versions are equally decent as a few friends use them.

As far as fitting is concerned, it couldn't be easier...if you can put a plug into a socket, it's no more difficult than that.  Locate the OBD2 port under the centre of the dash, remove the cover and plug in the reader, done!

I do use Harrys Lap Timer, I have tried quite a few others, but it is the one that I keep coming back to.  It just works where I've found that others can be a bit of a faff to set up and suffered from disconnects etc.

RaceChrono works fine for me. I think the best is to try the free versions for a drive or two over the weekend and then decide which one you like best. Either way ultimately you want to export the logs and looks through them in CircuitTools (available for free from RaceLogic)

hmmm I wonder if CircuitTools can read the data from my AiM Solo 2 DL

AIM use a crappy software that looks like it was made for windows 95 and doesn't run on macs.

The only item I need to solve is a phone mount option that is safe when used on track..... Any suggestion??

Brodit or Proclip, depending on which part of the world that you order from, do a great range of solid mounts for most cars and phones.  They are definitely up to track use.

You’re planning that for UK trackdays? Good luck with that!

Yeah I used a GoPro windscreen mount and provided I cable tied it to the rear view mirror they were happy. Their opinion was if it unstuck it would be contained and not smashing round the car or into someone!

just need an iPhone mount that holds the phone securely although I could cable tie the iPhone into the holder which probably opens up more options......

Securing a GoPro/camera is a different matter to an iPhone.

When a marshal sees an iPhone attached to your screen, he/she will presume that you are using it for timing and will ask you to remove it. In your case, they would be right!

I wouldn’t be timing.

just don’t want to have to go through the ball ache of overlaying Harry’s data with a GoPro or searching through and counting laps to know which is the fastest one.

much easier to just let Harry’s LapTimer do it's thing on the iPhone and then I can review it at home and keep my fastest laps in my iPhoto folder.

the GoPro whilst good hasn’t been looked at after the event as it’s one mass of data and unless I want to sit there retrospectively timing each individual lap I can’t see the best.

also Harry’s lap timer gives speed in the corners/straights so I can see if my fastest lap had the fastest speeds at all points or if not, know where my improvement can come from next time.

a vbox or aim solution is just overkill for my level and too expensive to justify for now......though when i did silverstone with David Pittard it was great to see my fastest lap/speeds etc

ive emailed Silverstone to get their view as I don’t want to buy it and not be able to use it as they just take a blanket view of “its timing”

I use GoPoint BT1 and works fine with Harry’s.

I find the biggest problem Is if your phone isn’t mounted in the windscreen and it say in the trinket tray you get a delay on speeds and positions as GPS signal isn’t as good.

One thing I haven’t had chance to play with yet is apparently if you have Apple Watch you can add your heart rate to videos

Erm, you’ll be using an app called ‘Harry’s Laptimer’! So no, I doubt if a marshal will believe you either...

I meant I won't be looking at the timing during the session but yup it seems that any sort of timing is not accepted. My first track day the pro driver had vbox obviously linked up with cameras on my windscreen (at Silverstone) and would then sit with me over a coffee showing me where I lost time - Marshalls didn't care one iota.

Have left a message for gold track to see what they say.

Now confused which way to go.......

A pro instructor might have a prearranged agreement (and additional insurance) with the TDO.

If you want a very user friendly way to overlay car and track data, the Garmin Virb does it all for you:

For example:

This is not the case. As long as you don't have big laptimer counter running in front of your face it is fine and does not really break any rules. You are fully fine to record the data about your car's operation or your position on the track and review it afterwards. Just not during the time of driving on the track.

By way of update I had confirmation back its fine provided it is secured properly so it can't go colliding round the cabin!

They confirmed should I choose to have a live timer as @vd9 mentions then of course that would have to be removed.
