S3 N/A cooling pipes help

Morning all.

a little help if possible from anyone ( @slewthy, @Barrykearley, @simon a-b, @Big Vern?)  with pics or experience of the NA cooling pies layout in the engine bay. Mine is an A/C, but not sure that makes a difference. I did take pics before it all came apart, but managed to misfile them somehow...

i have two alloy pipes, one short curved 32mm with a 15 mm offtake on the N/S. This is the waterpump inlet side, and i believe the offtake goes to the 'stat.? (TBC) Does this then feed into the N/S main thro chassi tube via an elbow hose?

the O/S alloy pipe is the big one with the otter switch in it. Connected to Outlet from the waterpump, with a single small feed to TOP of the header tank, and I assume the other end feeds to the thro chassis return pipe? (TBC) i have routed this one around the outside of the chassis tube as it seems the only way to fit in without fouling anything. Is this correct?

this then leaves the heater matrix pipes. Two remaining feeds are from flywheel end of the lump, and from the small outlet on the waterpump. Do these go direct to the chassis heater pipes, and if so, which way round? Or does it not matter, just do ir for convenience

the manual only seems to show the turbo, which has very different piping options and layout to mine. TIA

Thanks Dave. Just get the love back and you will be fine. Nice early start frm you n a Sunday morning, so must have been inspired.

You can download the drawing from the TLF site which will show you the N/A setup for cooling pipes. Been a while since I had my one out. If you cant find it, ping me back and I will scan and send a copy to you. Have a look through the technical help on the Esprit section.

Did a load of searches before posting John, but not found the downloads section of the site? Would be handy to bookmark it if you could send a link.

Got it fired up btw 👍🏻.Just for a few secs.  Waterpump belt and cooling pipes up next...

^ just noticed my membership has lapsed, maybe thats tot something to do with it?

Thx again...above link is for an 88, mine's an 82 G car...waterpump has fewer outlets, than the one in that diagram, but the general principles should help me figure it out.

any pics from anyone else would still be of use..

Hi Dave, below, hopefully attached is the best I can do right now. Remember that my car is not A/C and its 1986. First image is from top rear of engine bay. Second is closeup of same alloy tube where it attaches to the chassis.

Spot on Simon...confirms that the large pipe sits outside the chassis tube, so thanks for this!

the 15mm pipe at the top of the first pic that comes off the w/pump housing...where does that one go to? One of the heater tubes thro chassis?

Vern/John The diag above shows one of the pipes (under the red arrow) i was unsure about, feeding from the alloy 90deg tube to the bottom of the header tank. 

I will be back with the workshop manual on Friday tso may be able to figure a bit more of it out...

Dave,

To be clear, the water pump feeds pressure into the block, therefore the hoses connected are being drawn from - i.e. supply/cool side. The 15mm size at pump likely serves as return from the heater core, which is supplied hot feed via the take-off at rear of head as you have stated.

Apologies for the thread hijack, but would anyone have a photo of part no. 14, outlet elbow for a NA S3 car. Part number is A907E1188K.

Eric, it's not so much an elbow as a hemishpere with mounting flange and 32mm? outlet. Jus clapms  on top of the housing body.

can get a pic to you at the weekend if u still need one.

You can just about make it out in my first image, under the cambelt.

I believe I have the incorrect one fitted. God knows where I can now get the correct one from, unless by chance, there is one from another car that might be the same. The flange side on the thermostat housing should be fairly standard though.

Thanks guys, finally sussed it!

the pic posted above by John is, indeed correct...in as far as it goes........ What it doesn't show (and I can't find in the workshop manual) is the heating hose/pipe arrangement and which way they flow. There is a pic in the parts manual, but not specific to the S3, and no indication of how things connect to the block.

As far as I can make out, and following DrDoom's feed vs supply approach, the hose from the back of the block feeds into the heater matrix via the OS chassis tube, and the return feeds back into the spigot on the waterpump, looping up from the pump before heading back down to connect to the thro chassis heater pipe.

All of the above is probably childsplay to many of you, but I'm chuffed.

Just need a couple of new hoses and a bunch of stainless hose clips and it'll be ready for a trial engine run.

And the flow diagram in the workshop manual only serves to further mystify. I also believe that some cars may also be fitted with a PRRT.
