The instructions to use it are on pages 17/18 (section EA) of the factory Esprit service notes. If you havent got that here is the procedure, Dont attempt to adjust a hot engine only carry out adjustment at an engine ambiant temp. of 15 to 25 degrees centigrade. " Use cantilevered Burroughs gauge T000G0025J between the auxiliary and inlet camshaft pulleys . Fully extend the hook by pushing the handle completely down before inserting the belt between the nose piece and hook, ensuring that the hook is between the belt teath.Relise the handle with a rapid action,.A slow release will result in a HIGH readind owing to a small amount of internal friction present , stopping the hook from fully returning. Note the indicator dial reading. Repeat action several times "to get the feel" Take a further 2 readings at intervals of 120 crankshaft degrees, turning only in normal operating direction. The GB belt tension is 90-95 units (cold) On the federals like ours the deal is to slacken off the air pump(if you still have one) Screw the spring seat (adjusting screw) on the tensioner clockwise until only one to two threads are showing above the locknut and tighten locknut. Tension the air pump to 40lbs. ft. using tool T000T0320A and a torque wrench. Entirely relise load on air pump and re- torque to 20ft.lbs. Tighten all air pump mounts in that position.........................

Hope that is of some help :D

This Burroughs gauge sounds real accurate. In service notes there's line that say: Repeat action several times to "get the feel". Slow release will result in a high reading and so on... Why can't car manufactures do some simple measuring tool :D Lotus isn't the only one with this kind of tools.

What about those 'Cricket' things?

To me its the most boring game in the world! A close second is I'm afraid American football! 45 seconds of wandering about followed by about 15 seconds of somehting acutally happening! They are very closely related in that way! :D

I've never understood the instructions for the engines with air pumps. They imply that you don't use a Burroughs gauge at all. And what does the twnsioning on the air pump do that just screwing in the tensioner doesn't? If you set it to the high tension, then use a Burroughs gauge to tension the cam belt and then re-set the air pump belt tension, it would make sense. What am I missing?

i do believe my gauge is off. the circular white dial is not centered properly. can anyone confirm this by comparing to their gauge? when taking measurements, that little white rectanglular tick on the outside or the circle, is the closest marking to the raised metal mark on the main plunger housing. i've been calling the measured tension correct if that metal tick matches the white tick. when i got the tool back, the marks no longer align. i will of course confirm the problem before yelling at the borrower. thanks for your assistance.

I didnt have a Burroughs gauge when I did my belt, I just followed the instructions in the manual. It must be right as its still going at 3 yrs.!  :D

My airpumps gone,so didnt have to mess about with tensioning that. Extra steps for airpump are probably to avoid over tensioning belt and increasing strain on the cambelt :P

Airpumps gone  you are meaning one pump??? Or have you taken the vacuum pump out also???

i use an acer notebook computer. it cost $400 new! i usually see this forum from a winCE pocket PC. all the scrolling gets very tedious; i don't even attempt it on my phone. there should be a small screen option.

Wayne, which instructions did you follow? Was it the bit where you wind in the tensioner until only so much is showing past the locknut?
