Is this the most expensive Lotus Carlton ever to come to the open market?

You can pay this sort of money for a Sierra Cosworth,  not so good a Ford even back in the day, so why not for a much superior Lotus?

sierra cosworth has racing pedigree, looks fantastic (not saphire) did these cartons  actually do /win anything, or were the just a big lump of car with a fast engine for execs at the time?

No, they didn't need to go racing to raise their profile, they achieved notoriety from day one. Being the fastest production four door saloon for many years helped, but their infamy was gained by being a supercar quick car in the shape of something more commonly seen schlepping up and down the M1 being sold by a conventional manufacturer. This clash of cultures was unheard of back then and caused a furore throughout the motoring press, the mainstream press and even provoked questions in Parliament.

Whether this particular example is worth the asking price will be decided by the market.

Its been for sale at that price for over a year now, the old saying that a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it is pretty much true with this example.
