Exhaust Silencer Heat Shield

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Browsing through the Excel Parts list as I do when it is raining and spending money I haven't got I came across a section on heat shields. They either weren't fitted to the Excel I stripped for parts or I missed them. The part number begins with 089 which suggests to me they weren't introduced until 1989 and mine was an 88MY. Has anybody fitted them? Has anybody had any trouble by not having something there?. I fancy I may fit modern adhesive backed under-bonnet heat shielding as a precaution because I can.

Multiple opinions invited

There is a small heat shield fitted to the left hand engine mount to stop the exhaust melting the rubber, this was a retro fit for some cars and is mentioned as an addition in the workshop manual.

It was made of asbestos but i replaced mine with an alloy one.

Thank You Paul - I understand that one. I also understand the heatshields over the silencers. But what does the third one do and where does it fit - see below

On the Excel that part is a kind of "aluminised" moulded "board" riveted to the shell.  You will probably get one from a breaker, but personally I'd use something more effective;  something like the "DEI Floor and Tunnel Shield" from Nimbus Motorsport.  I used a lot of this product on the track car and it is brilliant - really easy to shape.

But where exactly is it? is it on the Driver's side in the footwell in front of the Ignition and Auxilliary relays. They may get hot, but are not exposed when behind the footwell interior panel. Or is it on the passenger side of the Central Tunnel - a Hot Gearbox, and if si why not on both sides?

Mmmmm......

It's fixed to the very front of the side of the transmission tunnel on the near side - kind of adjacent to the bell housing area.  It's there to help prevent heat soak from the exhaust which runs near there.
