if I can get the damn wiper arm off 🙂

Does the main part of the arm just slide off the splines? I can't get it to budge.

Not sure about the earlier cars but the later ones had the wiper arm bolted on which you undo by flipping up the cover, check out the parts diagram, if it's tough to get off you can get a puller to do it.

Looks like you have a lot of work to do, good luck. 😀

Thanks for the links John, I don't think the end flips up on mine, a puller won't work if that's the case. I'll take another look at this afternoon.

Dear Mr. Heston😀,

Suspect your early wiper arm should just come away through judicious prising with a tool as lever, working at 3 points of the periphery if possible.

Congratulations! Your project should result in yet another outstanding Lotus spared from oblivion.

If if has a nut securing slacken the nut a little and work the wiper against the nut and its original position. The nut being in position helps leverage both ways and usually free's off the stubborn arms. Sometime a kettle of hottish' water works too.

🙂 Yes that's what I did in the end, another job out of the way.

Update..... I have the car pretty much stripped down and ready for the body shop, just the passenger door left to strip.

I removed and cleaned up the hinge pin on the drivers door and the bushes look fine. I seemed to have slightly damaged the thread opening in the hinge pin when I was pushing it out of the housing. Does anyone know what size bolts fit the pin? I need to buy a tap to clear it out.

Thanks

Thanks for the Photos David. The bushes are fine, no play at all. The doors hadn't been opened for 28 years so someone had undone the top bolt slightly to make them easy to move. I took the pin to a local machine shop and they cleaned the thread up for me. I used a bit of 1200 wet and dry with the WD40 to clean the outside of the hinge pin, it had no rust, just needed a good clean.

Where did you get those brass bushes from?

I have photos supplied from various sources of original S1s, including @Paul Coleman

You can check out my restoration thread https://www.thelotusforums.com/forums/topic/106541-giugiaro-esprit-s1-full-restoration/?page=2

Or alternatively I can email them to you, as I no longer have the facility to post images on here.

Hi Chaps,

The rebuild is coming along nicely but I have an issue with a broken brake master cylinder....I snapped the mounting ear off trying to get the seized piston out. There seems to be lots of different suggestion for replacement, TR6, Marina ETC.

Can the servo and MC be upgraded to a later type or is there a reasonably priced alternative?

Thanks

How were the doors before you took them off?

That's the only way of checking the bushes to see if they're OK. For me it's false economy to not change the bushes when stripping the doors down this far.

I fitted oiled brass ones. They were like a dream.

do you happen to have the dimensions from the oiled brass bushes? so I can buy them in advance? (id/od) sj lists them from plastic but I wanne go brass as well.  thanks

These would be bronze bushes, by the way, and they are quite commonly available. One should check the size of the hinge pins before purchasing as there was some variance in OD of these in the early cars. Would be wise as well to measure ID of the door beam tubes as well, to be safe.

In my attempt to remove the stuck piston in my brake master cylinder I snapped the ear off! Damn!

SJ inform me they are no longer available...........does anyone have a used or reconditioned one they would be kind enough to sell me ? 🙂

Hang onto that, it's possible the odd bit may be useful in adapting a near correct replacement, particularly the pedal pushrod. Otherwise, I'd be surprised one may not find a suitable substitute as these things are rather uniform and ubiquitous across the automotive spectrum.

Cheers

Didn't need them.

I do , the glass is such a poor cut that there is very little wiggle room and getting the trims to stay in place while the adhesive sets will be impossible without them
