Fixing INE-W920R reboot on ignition

Recommended Posts

NB: Moving some cross posts here to avoid cluttering another thread.

I want to try to fix the headunit which came with my Evora S (an Alpine INE-W920R) from rebooting itself at the moment of starting the engine, it's particularly frustrating if you've just punched in a postcode on the navigation screen, then start the engine and watch the headunit take a minute to reboot forgetting the planned route in the process.

It was suggested this was down to the ACC line to the headunit losing power briefly, and so signalling the headunit to shutdown.

So I'm hoping splicing in a capacitor will keep the ACC signal powered for a few extra seconds so the headunit doesn't need to shutdown and power on again.

Removing the headunit has been covered in a number of other threads, most recently here...

Getting the top left right silver tabs which are mounted to the headunit past the dark plastic required some judicious Dremel'ing ...

Once removed, I pondered these lone connectors, one marked 'USA' ? which weren't plugged in to anything.6F4B4B45-3FA1-472A-9603-B019E7A949F6.thumb.jpeg.79e52a3bbc8281dc8f6628ba8506fb3f.jpeg.6f63f2fc9ca501bb69327eb8dac74aac.jpeg

A later examination of the upper cable bundle in the photo (the main power and speaker connector), shows the lower disconnected pink and black cable is part of that bundle and appears to go to the 'REVERSE' connector pin?!

It's a bit annoying most of the suggested wire colours dont match!

So we have a few oddities;

  • ACCESSORY is Pink/Green (rather than Red)
  • REVERSE appears to be unplugged from it's potential 'USA' connector?
  • Connector Pin 3, although apparently N/C (not connected?), is Red/Black.

As per many suggestions online, I've used a 16v 2200uF electrolytic capacitor, along with a 1N4001 diode on the feed leg.

As I'm by no means a certified automotive electrician, I just used a trusty screw connector block to piece it all together.

Delighted and relieved in equal measures that this works a treat, no more inopportune reboots of the headunit when starting the car, and the unit remains on for about four seconds after the key has been removed. I wish I'd done this when I first got the car!
