a gearbox problem

Hi fellow Esprit nuts,

has anybody got a spare gearbox or can tell me where to find one.

mine broke (diff i think, not looking good anyway ) on the way to get a dreaded MOT.

The gearboxes are like rocking horse poo I'm afraid. If you can find out exactly what has gone in the gearbox I may be able to help as I have a old gearbox that has a few teath missing of the syncro of second gear (I think it's second anyway).

The Diff part of it looks fine though.

I believe there is a used tranny source in Sweden. Esprit2 sent me a reference some time ago. I will try and find it.

Has the tranny completely lost drive? Is it stuck in a gear?

will have to make further investigations, have got drive as far as i know in all the gears. but a clicking noise from the box turns to a banging noise by about 20mph. if the right disc is rotated forwards - it will sometimes turn the left one back

(as it should)

try the same with the left one and i can feel it trying to engage but it jumps out straight away and the right does not move(apart from a twitch)

i try not to stop on the net too long as i'm still 'pay as you go' think i will be going broadband soon.

You could try SM World in California.

They told me they often rebuild Esprit gearboxes.

It hasn't been updated for a while, but they are still in business. They are just down the road from where I work and they still have plenty of cars around their shop.

By the way, they got a Citroen Sm to go faster than 200 mph so I'm sure an Esprit can do it.

Hi you could try Douglas Valley breakers.I got one from them about a year ago when my CWP exploded.

Ok.... I just spoke to them!!!

I was hoping they might be helpful or forthcoming but it was like trying to pick a winkle (jokes ahoy)

They don't have an uprated version of the box - I was rather hoping they might offer a Citroen SM equivalent of a Derek Bell conversion... NOPE!

Their 200+ mph SM was done by using a 388:1 (may have been 288:1?) pinion at 7500rpm but he has never been able to get his hands on one since!

and that's about all I could usefully get out of the guy!

I don't know if any of our more stateside friendly and TACTFUL (ie not you Teigan! ) members can get any more useful info from them?

If they had offered some kind of megabox, they would have been seeing custom from me next year!

I do have a number from a company that design uprated gearboxes for the kit car industry. I spoke to one of them at a show a they said that they are sure that they could uprate the gearbox, and even make new/replacement gears. I have yet have not gone to speak to them. It was going to be on my to do list when the car is finnished. Would there be a strong interest in this to make a group buy and share the cost of development. Only if I end up paying for the develpment on my own then I will proberbly end up selling the boxes myself to try and claw back soem money. But this is all achedemic at the meoment until I get to show them the box.

I have spoken to Steve about the crownwheel and he is trying to dog it out he will get back to me ASAP.

There's a few pages in English, but go to the dutch section and there is a section on the esprit box under photos. I guess they could recondition your box which may be a better long term bet than a used replacement.

yep, already had a price from them , fully recon box 2800 euros. hmmmm think will have to pass on that!
