USB Solution for Freescan

For a while now there has been a need to develop a reliable solution that will allow PC uses with just USB ports to run Freescan which operates via a serial interface.

This afternoon a sucessfully run Freescan on my car with a USB-serial interface. It is plug and play, works on my Dell laptop with Win XP. It is a nice solution. Drivers for all other flavours of Windows available.

Will bring it along to show on Sunday. I have been working on this for a while and tried loads on different adaptors. Kato will be offering them on LEW but we may want to have a group purchase.

Luke,

Yes I know about these. The cost is comparable when you take into account shipping, import duty, VAT and handling fees.

We also have some people who already have serial interfaces and change computers. So we can now offer either interface.

Please email me if anyone is interested.

Would there be a chance of any further development into a PDA based version of the software?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

There was a version of Freescan for the Palm platform some time ago, Palmscan IIRC, Dermot emailed it to me some time ago but I can't lay my hands on it right now. Given the changes in the Palm pilots over the intervening years I suspect it won't work on more modern ones (certainly not on the USB-only ones as they lack serial support) but old Palms are readily available on Ebay. If all you want is a highly portable solution then an old palm and palmscan would probably do it.

Hello,

I've been using a PCMCIA serial card for some time as my IBM laptop lacks a serial port and it works great. It gives your laptop a legacy COM port. The card i use is Quatech SSP-100 in combination with the andy whittaker interface.
