Freescan Connection Issues (usb)

I just got my freescan cable yesterday and have not been able to get it to connect. I get the message about locating start header. Here's the details:

1) Dell "legacy-free" Laptop

2) Using USB to Serial cable (seems like a good one)

3) Tried COM1,2,4 using 9600 baud and 8,1,N.

4) Tried both the fore and aft ALDL ports

3) When I disconnect the ALDL cable the status message stops scrolling. This makes me think some data is getting though.

Any thoughts?

Luke.

I really am not joking here Luke, is your ignition on?

I spent a while trying to get mine to talk before doing this,

But thats just the Paul C 'Read the instructions only if you fail' system... :)

Can't help any more than that (which probably did not), Dermot is the man to help you...

That is, if you bought his Excellent Freescan users Manual with free log diagnosis etc?

(See LEW E-shop if you need that :P )

My front connector (passenger side) does not work to well. Where as the rear connector is fine for data transfer. I think it is just noise on the line in the front connector, cos when I do get it to work it drops the idle down to about 500 rpm. Which feels a bit iffy at the lights when on a run.

Keep to the back connector first, until you get the thing running. I'm using a non modern laptop - Toshiba Satellite Pro from memory - Using Win98SE. Once I figured that the internal modem was trying to talk at the same time, I disabled it and then saw the data just fine. Didn't use my usb ports though, just the standard serial buggers at the back.

Hi

I'm using a good old Vintage IBM Thinkpad, It hails from

the days when USB's were the distant future.

Seriously now, :)

Some Database of Laptops people are using to talk to their Esprits would be a good idea. Owners could then find someone who is using the same as them and find out what they are using software and connection wise.

Knowledge could then be gleaned as to which USB adaptors work (or don't) with which laptops, and then with which software.

This would give people an idea of what to be looking for if they are getting an old laptop for Esprit Purposes only (like mine).

As PC's are not really my field, i'm guessing this idea is flawed in some way though :P

For my logger, I have successfully used:

Dell CPI, CPI-A, C640 and D600 series laptops

IBM T20-23, 600x laptops

I don't know that locating start header error, but if the data is scrolling in the status message window, you are connected and your laptop is recieving data. Did you have to hit the Force Data Interact button or does it just start going? What are your other settings? i am assuming you have Lotus Esprit 4 cylinder selected as well.

On a slightly off topic note, if you or anyone is looking for a laptop, I have an IBM T22, IBM 600x and a Dell CPi I am selling. they are all good loging laptops, some may need a good battery, but I am unloading them real cheap. Email me at lotus1994@optonline.net if interested.
