unsuccessful windscreen replacements

the esprits have a structural windscreen. and it's flat. not a great combination. somehow, there are more successful replacements than not. what specific mistakes cause the unsuccessful ones to eventually fail? the instructions in the service manual look simple enough. is there more to the story?

I had my windscreen replaced a few months back by RAC Auto Windscreens. The windscreen's not flat by the way, it's got a slight curve.

It's important to follow the correct procedure when fitting, and spacers are normally required to fit it properly. When spacers aren't used, you often don't get a good seal and then they leak rain water. I contacted Lotus about it and they sent me 2 pages of instructions and said use spacers.
