Exhaust Crackle And Pops...

Recommended Posts

When my exhaust pops when I let off the throttle is that a sign it is running too rich?

No..... Pop / burble is because of Engine timing or the ADVANCE to be specific. This is what all that VVT Zetec VTec (etc) stuff is about....

You advance the timing so that at higher revs the mixture gets burned at a more efficient rate and you get better performance but when you lift off and at lower revs, this means that sometimes the engine sparks a natch too soon and the unburned fuel then ignites in your hot exhaust causing the burbles and pops :)

The new Variable timing things keep the advance small at low revs and then increase it higher up the rev range to maximise performance and efficiency (and economy I guess)

I think this is just about right....!

PS I agree - it's a SUPERB sound :blink::D :D

It's just to remind you that you are in a supercar, with a super sound to match :blink:

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I hacked the resonator off of my old '95 jetta, and it did the same thing. Exhaust got throaty, and made alot of noise. Too bad it wasnt a supercar...

But my mustang does it too. Pretty loud also. I'll show you the next time we meet Luke.
