Plenum to Engine stay girder type thing, is it really needed ?

Sort of thinking Lotus wouldn't have put it there for no reason but is there that much strain on the intake manifold that it needs something like this clamped to the side ?

Just been in the way lately and removed it, noticed how rusty it was too

I have seen quite a few cars without it but as Lotus are well known on not ading hings they don't need I would say that they must have put it on there to aleviate the strain on the manifold and injection bodies.
