Gear problems

Recommended Posts

Hi, Was wondering if anyone could tell me what is likely to be the problem on my 2.2 turbo se. I know that they have a pretty naff gearbox at the best of times, but now i'am no unable to get into reverse gear at all!

Have been told it could very well be a gear selector problem!

But it would be nice to now if anyone has had the same problems.

Read these to save time, the subject has been covered

to death! Red hose will be mooted as the most probable

solution, but read the following threads that also go into

depth on other causes.

Multiutude of things really:

First if you can select all gears apart from reverse then the clutch sound be fine....to be fair you can select gears without the clutch when the car is stopped anyways most of the time.

If that done work take the gaiter off and make sure the lifter mechanism for reverse is working - its a very basic arangement, the gear lever wont go into reverse without the collar being clear of the gate.

Finally there is a switch in the gearbox to enable the reversing light, friend of mine had a problem recently where the car was stuck in reverse, the switch was faulty and jammed the pull levers inside the gearbox itself....try taking the switch off slightly and see if that solves the problem.

The switch is a 22mm nut that goes on the drivers side of the gearbox and it is directly behind the gaitors where the gear change cables are, has 2 wires running from it so you should be able to see it propperly.

Hope that helps !

Tried putting it in first, first?

Limits it happening a lot, i'm not tech

enough to know why, but it does help.

Mine crunches too though sometimes.

Get to a meet early and listen to people

arrive: Crunch, Crunch, Crunch...

Who's walking on the crisps then??? :D

i'm more worried about damage, plus highly embarrasing in car parks and car shows getting into a space crunch crunch........

seems to happen once engine warm, ie not when cold and reversing out of drive ever

I have this exact same problem on my 1994 S4. When the engine is cold I never have a problem getting into reverse, however, once the engine is hot and I have driven around for awhile, 90% of the time it will usually grind shifting into reverse. I also have the stainless clutch hose upgrade.

Bleeding issues? I re-bled mine with the car's nose higher than the rear. Puts the slave on a slight tilt so the bleed nipple is higher. Hardly any bubbles came out the second time but enough to make the difference.

Hi Ed,

Having had the same kind of problems with gears as you.

I took action on advice that was given to me by the kind folk that use this site.

It turned out to be leaking on the slave clyinder. The gearbox end.

Problem sorted, Now just waiting for the next one!

Many thanks to those that offered advice

Happy Motoring
