Disabling a Giugiaro

madmezza

Question

Can anyone suggest easy to remove/replace relays/fuses etc to take out to stop the car being nicked? I'm being over-cautious, but it's a fairly easy thing to do.

E.g. is the starter motor relay easily accessable? Is the fuel pump controlled by a relay? Would removing any of the fuses stop the car?

I would go and have a look and check the wiring diagram, but I'm at work at the moment and wondered if anyone has this info off hand?

Ingenious and obvious when you think about it Glyn - top idea :P

Rich - just in case you don't know, the infamous fuel cut off / inertia switch it inside the boot, behind the carpet in front of the battery. A bump can cause this thing to pop out and is very easily forgotten!

Most of the relays in our cars iirc are under the glove compartment (Lotus position time) and under the bonnet... Tho it has been sufficiently long since I saw my car that I cant swear to that!

Glyn's suggestion is DEFINITELY wat I shall be doing no as a matter of course :P

(unless they're known to wear out!!) :)

easiest thing i can think of would be to simply pull the fuel cut off switch meaning no power to the fuel pump

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Would that apply to a NA S3 ?

My car used an SU pump, and I don't remember any cut-off switch.

Can't see one on the wiring diagram either.

:P

Yes Im pretty sure it applies to more Esprits than it doesn't

and as I describe above... it's nowhere near the fuel pump.

the esprit is bottom on the list of stolen cars in your country and mine. not only because it is rare, as they do adjust the numbers accordingly. accords, integras, civcs that is. the japanese cars are at highest risk. that being said, i agree that with the fish doctor about the fuel cutoff switch being too fragile a solution. you don't want to stress that part by using it, god forbid. intall a secondary fuel cut off switch, or use a starter motor solenoid cutoff switch. get a cheap mp3 player and rig it to laugh at the person trying to start your car dishonestly.

be honest. you were just driving her at normal passing speed. it doesn't take much effort to disable an esprit. remember the anti theft device in for your eyes only? certainly the best way to turn your white car into a red one; with skis thrown in to boot.

You will have to remember that you have pulled the switch, the car can still be started as there will be fuel in the carbs, it only cuts the pump out.

Half a mile down the road and car stops as the carbs run out of fuel probably half way out of a junction!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the idea's. I shall have a nosey around tomorrow as I'm probably going to take her to work (150 mile round trip - fingers crossed, everyone!). If she works over that distance, I might go to the hotel in her.

Bit worried about 2 days of being left outside in a hotel car park. Not supposed to rain anymore (British weather, eh?!), but scratches, break-ins and attempted theft are all worries...

Theoretically, the insurance will cover everything, but the car has a lot of sentimental value as well (it was my brothers and he died earlier this year - hence owning it now) - so I really am being very cautious.

Rich I TOTALLY understand your caution...

Everyone here has mad insane attachments to their cars so will completely understand where you're coming from... I just think that your reason is somewhat more profound than most of ours!

My biggest fear is generally vandalism... the very first time I took it out one night up to Camden I was parked up on the main road and standing aside with a friend chatting and waiting for a parking space... Some funny fcuker crossed the road over to my car and took out his keys and gestured to his mates across the road about keying it

Oh how we laughed

Oh how close he came to A&E

The mere fact that it even went through his mind just shows the mentality (emphasis on the mental) of some morons out there
