Intermittent wipers-easy mod.

Recommended Posts

Here's an easy mod for infinately variable wipers instead of single speed. Swap the GM relay for the Volkwagon one with the built-in timer. Part number 357 955 531. To set, move the wiper lever to intermittent for the first wipe and off again. When screen needs another wipe just turn it on and leave it. Want to change the interval, repeat the procedure. As for Esprits before the S4, I don't know.

I originally did the VW relay swap to my wife's Calibra T after learning about the mod on a Calibra site. I'd seen so many bits of Calibra on the S4 that I decided to try her relay first to make sure.

thats I heard about it, MIGWEB. the performance Vauxhall web place. bought a fair bit of stuff from there. my Cav is also on there in the members cars pages. just got to get the Esprit brakes as good as the Cavalier ones now!

Calibras and Cavs are a bit under rated in my opinion. mines been ace. they go on forever in a kinda volvo like fashion.

also going to attempt to fit an S4 top steering column casting/moulding that takes the vauxhall sticks, coz standard X180 early ones are ex marina/dolomite/sherpa van etc, and there cack. all wobbly and horrible.

you may well have to take the part number to the VW dealer. havent seen them in any normal motor factors. mine has 99 printed on the end of it in half inch high letters, if your looking at VW's in a scrapyard. the bloke i got mine from for the cavalier wasnt letting on what it was actually off of.

Got me a VW relay this afternoon at my local breakers! Haven't fitted it yet but Iam sure it'll work. Might have another two relays tommorrow, waiting for one breaker to come back to me.

It don't take much to get me excited with my boring lifestyle...

Just popped down to the local VW dealer here in Darmstadt.

Ordered the relay but not in stock. The gut said it should be in next week.

Cost was 31

Excuse me for asking, but isis possible to fit that relay on the 1990 Turbo SE?

Pretty sure it's only from the S4 on with the later, GM, stalks.

Cheers,

I think you might be wrong, it's just a relay replacing a relay.

I've got one fitted in my 1996 Defender and that doesn't use GM stalks.

Not according to this:

Doesn't say that it doesn't work on earlier cars, there isn't any reason why it shouldn't. :)

As Dave Walters said: "I don't think the pre S4 Esprit has a wiper relay, that's the problem. They have a wiper control unit (a small box). The post S4 has the relays you are referring to."

Discussion here.

Ahh see where you are coming from, didn't realise that there wasn't a relay fitted (I never had the need to look on my Turbo). :)

Whew! just read the comment about no relay in my SE so you saved me $25! Just about to buy this relay - NEW Volkswagen Cabrio EuroVan Golf Jetta Passat Pulse Wiper Relay KAE 3B0955531.  My manuals are with the car in the shop so I could not look at any schematics before purchasing. But someone else might take a look at this item if they have a suitable coach...

Thanks yet again for saving my limited bankroll.
