when the esprit was appearing in magazine adverts, the articles in those same magazines were nothing but positive. this is true of their treatment of all cars, which is why i throw those magazines in the bin without reading them. i do like glancing at the photos though.

It's the problem with the uncared for examples getting the rest a bad name. It always ammuses me though that they never discuss the fragility of a ferrari or lambo?? I think they forget that they are a high performance supercar and not a japanese/german box!!

When you get articles on ferrari they are always made out to be perfect. Having never driven one I can't comment but I bet an abused example is a pile of rubbish!!

Here's the article.  See what you think:

At least the car in the article looked as clean as they come.

Although the belts last 60K miles, even on a Nissan Pathfinder the motor has to come out to change them. On Ferraris the motor needs to comes out ($2500) and mechanics change the water pumps as a matter of course as well (another $1500), rather than risk having to pull the motor again because the pump resides behind the belts.

The problem areas mentioned may be legitimate, but it's the overall tone in which they're conveyed that gives such a bad impression.

I think the harshness comes in the media's classification of an Esprit. While Esprit enthusiasts may regard them as supercars, it appears that the media considers them to be mere sports cars, which are judged by a harsher standard of practicality than the higher dollar exotics.

Go down to your local performance car specialist and testdrive one! It's worth it just for the thrill... You'll need to take the Esprit down to hint that you might be actually able to buy one, and swot up on all the Ferrari stats. A few days after getting my Esprit I managed to talk a dealer into letting me test drive a 328 GTS Convertible (on a A-Reg), and I'm only 21! He drove it most of the way, but he let me have little spin back.

They're fantastic cars needless to say, but the old ones are about power more than speed. Apparently the new ones have evrything....
