removing gas struts

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at having the gas struts refurbished, they're the ones that lift the rear lid over the trunk and engine compartment. I can see where a nut holds the lower end of the strut, but I'm not sure about the upper. Can I just put a wrench on them and start turning, or do I need to get into the lid to find another nut in there?

Nooo, don't undo the "nuts" They are really balls that the strut locks onto. Think ball and socket joint, the strut being the socket.

On the end of the strut where it clips onto the brass coloured ball is a retaining clip (it's a 'c' shaped strip of metal approx 1cm wide) You need to prise this off (screwdriver etc), which will then unlock the joint and the strut can be popped off the ball.

If you have a self locking strut fitted to your tailgate (the tailgate 'locks' into position and has to be lifted upwards slightly to release) then unclip that one first. When refitting both struts, leave the locking one until last.

Be aware, however, that the tailgate is not a lightweight item and an extra pair of hands to support it's weight is expremely useful. When both struts have been unclipped the taigate can slam shut, trapping fingers, screwdivers or small children in the process. Even something as simple as a broomhandle will help.

The tail gate weighs about the same as a small Norwegian car

Hey, can anyone smell fuel?????
