Rear valance removal

Recommended Posts

Just a trivial question.

I'm going to paint the black rear valance/spoiler under the bumper on my '97 V8 silver like the rest of the car. I believe the '00 and '01 cars came with this part factory painted and I like the look. I assume there are bolts or screws reached through the small holes on either side. Its difficult for me to tell with my car on ground level. I know its a stupid question, but would someone mind answering for me? Thanks!

You are correct about the 2001 MY. Also the rear tail light trim (black plastic trim around lens) and "licene plate area" are all painted to match the car. It looks very cool and makes a drastic statement... IMO.

Yeah the aerofoil (which it's also know) is a doddle to remove, just 2 bolts as Carl says.

My brackets were also rusted to near nothingness - I restored them but now you mention it thats obviously where the water is coming in up behind the rear wheels.

Does the V8 have blanks fitted into the bumper then ?

Got some high density foam at work so I might cut myself a few when I'm bored next (which will be at 9am tomorrow morning LOL).

I checked this out at the Oulton Park meet and yes they do. I thought maybe mine had come off but there was another S4 there and that was the same as mine no blank at the rear of the wheel arch. So an obvious engineering change from Lotus there by the looks of things. I dont take my car out in the wet so its not going to be a problem for me but Ill be interest to see what if anything you deciede to do.

Annoying thing is all the brackets that pin the wrap around rear bumper to the body work were all in a very bad state on my car and I had to replace them all which was a really pain given there location as Im sure you've found. :D

make sure it's closed cell foam, or it'll slowly get heavy from air moisture nesting in. i'd love to have soft newtech elastomer bumpers. every car should have them, but functional bumpers are still out of fashion.

My valance has some minor damage, which I am meaning to get around to sorting, however one of the mounting brackets is also bent, (not to mention rusty) Does one undo this from inside the car or outside?, Where can I get new brackets, or did you just make some?

thanks

Valance or Aerofoil...the black thing is called the aerofoil (as opposed to the wing which sits on the back).

Depends which one, the near side is a pain to get off, the off side is easy cus you can pull it through the hole in the GRP for the boot vent.

Pull the back carped up and you'll see 4 nuts vertically on the grp inside, those (2 each side) hold the aerofoil brackets onto the body. New brackets - SJ sportscars would be my 1st port of call.

Oh btw (shamless plug) I have a spare aerofoil if you need to replace yours :D

I bought new high strength L brackets and drilled and tapped them to fit. I also replaced all nuts and bolts.

I agree. I also noticed the license plate area is painted on 2000 and 2001 cars. I like that look as well, but I also like the black area.

The rear valance sort of gets lost when black, which is why I'm going to change it.
