Strange rear tire wear

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I know it's been a while since I have posted. Been out of the country. Been in Jolly 'ole england! Hanging out in Manchester for a while! Had some fun.

Anyway.

I find this very strange. I have noticed that the center tread is very low compared to my right and left treads of my Michelin Pilot Sports. These are the rear tires.

The center tread is almost bald while the left and right treads have at least 8/32 tread on them, perhaps more. What is the issue? Is this normal for Esprits? Or do I have a camber/toe issue? Could it be bad struts or tire pressure? I run my tires at 32psi all around.

My driving style is aggressive street, but I do not do burnouts.

Any help would be appreciated. Hope things been well for all of you! Happy to be back on the forums!

Camber would normally affect the inner or outer, not both, so this leaves rear toe-in/out or tyre pressures ...

Do you check tyre pressures regularly? In summer they will rise significantly with ambient temperature.

I check my pressure regularly. It has been consistent. I have been thinking it is tor-in/out. As my inner and outer treads are not wearing down as quickly and the center tread. How do I check the toe-in/out and where can I find the specifications for toe-in/out?

Needless to say, I need to get new tires now.

I'd go tyre pressures too! I've noticed (on many cars) can be huge difference between what manufacturer recommends, what tyre shops say and what your garage do when they service the car (usually well-over inflate!)

MK1 Volkswagen Golf Owners Club Well, had to get this one in if anyones interested?!

sounds like overinflation.  tyre pressure should be 29 from memory..

Here in the US, the sticker on the door tells that it's 29psi for MPH under 150 and 32psi for cars that constantly do 150+. Ooops.. I guess I just told on myself, huh? LOL..

I will lower it to 29psi with the new set and see how it performs above 160mph.

The rear Goodyears on my S3 NA used to do this. I think it's something to do with the width of the tyre and how it's constructed.

Paul.

PS The rears on my Excel wear the same way.

Hi Nathan,

The V8 gets around 2.0-2.4 bar in his rear tires. I feel that yours have been over inflated.

Ok, well I have my next set of ires on order. When I get them installed, I will run 29psi (I think that's 2.2 bar) in them. It's to late for the rear tires that are on the car.
