Air Filter -> to -> Turbo pipe....

Recommended Posts

At some point the high pressure oil line went inside the car and showered everything in oil including this pipe. I have tried to get it off but it is so soaked in the stuff it's impossible and now the thing is falling appart.

Its the original canvasy thing with the wire wound supports.

Talked to SJ today and they recomended me a rubber alternative that the later cars had (why didn't mine have it ?) but are there other alternatives to that ? Silicon perhaps ?

Main issue is the diameter as it is a tapered pipe from 80mm to 60mm I believe.

Any ideas or go with this rubber thing at

Silicone hose all the way would be expensive. And unless it is bellowed with steel rings or similar, it would also be prone to collapse due to the pressure drop over the air filter.

The best thing IMHO would be a custom built aluminium pipe with a short silicone hose in either end. Smooth inside for low pressure drop, and good looking as well. Anodise in your favourite colour.

Carl obviously means 60mm and 100mm...

It is pretty easy to get 60mm internal diameter aluminium ducting (the stuff that Carl used). My problem with it is that it is not very resistant to puncture. I bugger about with my car all the time and I am sure that I'd put a screwdriver through it sooner or later. Trouble is, even with a small hole you're sucking unfiltered air from a dirty engine bay, so I didn't want to take the risk.

You can get decent hose - in a variety of different materials from places like Merlin Motorsport.

Personally, Merlin have always given me great service and are very knowledgeable and polite - a really good bunch of guys. There prices are also pretty good...

I don't have a stake in the company and don't know them personally - just think they give exceptional service from my perspective...

Probably going to go for the SJ one.

Nothing against aluminium  but they do look a bit fragile....one I've had before on induction kits were as well.

Let ya know how it goes !

Cheers

PS: I'm liking with that signature thing Ian hehe

Carl's looks a bit fragile... Michael Rodrigues' does not; it looks perfect. :D

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Its more robust than it perhaps looks due to the number of rings in the pipe but it was definetly the budget option and given the state of the pipe I took off I couldnt wait to change it. To this end it doesn squash like the origonal but it would be easy to puncture it if your messing in the engine bay with the boot floor out.

If anyone has any pictures of alternatives that cost less than

the rubber ones have more air resistance if you have any curve in your path. rubber tends to fold rather than arc. use a good quality tubing bender on aluminum or ss, and you'll get better airflow despite the laminar surface. micro eddys are good, standing turbulence is not. speaking of fragile, i know of several top dollar carbon fiber tubes that have eventually cracked due to twisting.
