ECU Trouble code 43

43 - Electronic Spark Control (ESC) Circuit

Any ideas what causes this and how to fix it? My searching of the net points to this being a signal from the 'knock sensor' which picks up engine vibrations usually associated with pinking but might be something else... any clues guys?

The Bible says:

********

The ECM performs two tests on this circuit to determine if it is operating correctly. If either of the tests fail, a code 43 will be set.

* If there is an indication of knock for 3.67 seconds over a 3.9 second interval with the engine running.

* If ECM terminal 'J1A11' voltage is either above about 3.75 volts (indicating open CKT 37U), or below about 1.25 volts (indicating CKT 37U is shorted to ground) for 5 seconds or more.

********

It says to - Check CKT 37U at the ECM connector. ;)

Do you have a copy of the Electronic MPFI Chargecooler Manual ???

Do you need a copy of the Code 43 Fault finding pages ??

This just happened to me today on the way to work.

Used freescan to see the code and that the knock was at only 6 and not climbing.

Looked at the connector and measured it at 4K to ground, so it wasn't shorted.

Bought a replacement knock sensor Borg Warner S8009 at the local autoparts store for $32.

That knock sensor is out of a 1990 Buick Century btw.
