Play in Clutch shaft

Recommended Posts

I hope I don't already know the answer to this question, but have just split apart the engine and (Renault) gearbox of my 1990 NA and there is a fair degree of play (several mm) on the clutch shaft - I know it sits in a taper bearing at the back of the shaft, inside the gearbox, but is this normal? - I didn't take it apart because of any noises or problems.

Grateful for any info, painful or otherwise...

agreed. it's perfectly normal. I knew other input shafts that felt quite solid, but the UN1 seemed to have significant play. I ended up contacting JAE whom quickly confirmed for me that because of the two piece shaft, there will be more play than usual and is not only a VERY common question they get, but also very normal.

Hi all,

Just checked while the engine/ box are split, and I have approx 4mm lateral play on the input shaft (Citroen box, '82 n/a).

Reading the above I believe this is ok, but could anyone confirm whether this is within tolerance?

Thanks,

Dave
