Is it completely dead. Starter motors can clog up with dust etc. A strip down and clean up with some new grease and if needs be new brushes will often get them going again. Otherwise have a word with Lotus bits or Peter at PNM engineering.

On my 84 its a standard Lucas pre-engaged unit. Same as my TR6 except the orientation of the solenoid etc. I would have thought an auto electric place could match it on sight.

if its the same starter as the S4, which i suspect it will be, I got a recon unit stright swap from a

Jaguar XJ of the time if remember correctly. All done for £50 at a local recon shop.

Sorry, just re-read your post and I thought you said 1989 SE.
