Clutch Master Cylinder

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

As you know I've got an Eclat which is undergoing errrm....... 'restoration and upgrades'. This includes new chassis, gearbox, engine, suspension, brakes etc etc. I'm fitting an Excel chassis to the thing, one of the drivers behind this was to allow use of the W58 gearbox. Because the Eclat has a cable operated clutch, I need to install a hydraulic master cylinder into the pedalbox. This was Mike Taylors suggestion, I looked at him a bit funny when he suggested it - but on reflection it is the most sensible option and I have found a neat way of making it work, having found a suitable master cylinder type.

The only snag is I need to specify a volume for the master, the way I'm going to install the master means there is not much option for changing the travel, so I need to get a master cylinder with the right bore size , to get the correct swept volume.

so does anyone know the swept volume of the clutch master? Or at least the travel of the master cylinder? I have the standard excel slave cylinder.

Any help or info appreciated.

Cheers, Mat.

Hi Mat

The travel of the clutch 'actuating arm' (in an Excel) at the clevis end varies a little depending on the adjustment of the pedal, but it is about 33- 36mm. I'm using a 0.75" slave with a 33mm stroke and full depression of the clutch pedal just achieves a full stroke. Hope this helps. Out of interest, how are you going to mount the master cyl - the bulkhead is different to the Excel?

Hi Pete,

I should have thought of asking you..... I'm using the Eclat pedalbox as the Excel one, although it looks the same, is a different size and shape, enough to be a problem fitting. It's taller at the top fom the hydraulic clutch activation arm.

Yes you're right the bulkhead is different, I thought about glassfibre mods to allow use of the Excel pedalbox, but this would be a lot of hassle. I've got a plan to fit the master in the pedalbox itself, there is a lot of space above the clutch pedal (especially once the old cable wheel is removed). The master will have to be the pull type, and have a remote reservoir. Needs a bracket making and welding on. Once I've done it and taken a photo it will be clear.

How are you doing by the way? And how is your car coming on?

Cheers, Mat.

PS - thanks to whoever moved this thread into the correct category.....:)

Niel at Caprisport designed a cable operated remote for the master cylinder when he developed a V8 conversion for the Capri, it wasn't complicated and was adjustable for pedal travel, you can contact Niel for details through his website: http://www.caprisport.com/ he's a total petrol head and loves a challenge!

hope this helps
