The car had a new alternator (and belt) fitted about 5 weeks ago - however recently it has started to screech if I give it some gas when pulling off (i.e. I have to pull off very very gently) - it only happens when I have the fans on / headlights on as well - and it doesnt last long - I assume it is therefore the alternator belt - but any thoughts?

Sounds like it to me.

Yep belt tension. Most likely either the belt wasn't set tight enough to start with, or more likely the alternator wasn't done up properly and has slipped. Its easy to check/fix the belt tension so definitely shld be your first port of call.

Just to report this was a loose belt - all fixed now.

Sorry - alternator belt that is.
