slave cylinder space

Recommended Posts

would like to know out there if someone can measure the distance from the lock nut to the frame where the cylinder itself is bolted on and not the actual 12.5mm they request. This is simply because the cylinder i installed is not the exact length nor is the push rod so i need the distance so i can obtain the right adjustment. My clutch is slipping and i want to rule out the distance cause i know that oil leaking in, air in line, pressure plate, master cylinder or last clutch need replacing. Please feel free to let me know of any other reason for slipping is thx

An easier test would be to check to make sure there is no pre-load on the clutch with the pedal released and you can do that by spinning the pushrod. If you can freely spin the pushrod, there is no preload. If the rod is tight and hard to spin then you have preload on the clutch which can cause it to slip.

Be sure to work the clutch pedal a couple of times before you check it.

Luciano, if it's a non-standard slave cylinder you'll need the measurement from the lock nut to the part of the piston where the push rod contacts with the piston is pushed back in the bore as far as possible. If not any variance in the slave cylinder's piston depth is still a possible issue.

well, the cylinder is obviously positioned differently than the previous one but i would think that the travel is the same this is why i would need the measurement, i guess if anyone would have the full measurements of the original that is lock nut to end of cylinder and lock nut to frame of bolts this would be easier to calculate thanks

The distance of travel and any other measurements you're asking about have nothing to do with whether the clutch is slipping or not. If there is no preload on the rod/clutch with the pedal at rest then your slipping problem is being caused by something else.

If you were having a problem shifting or the clutch not disengaging completely, the measurements you're asking about would be more relevant.

this was supposed to be an original was ordered along with new braided hose, when it was installed the rod was set to 12.5 and exerted too much pressure that the clutch was not engaging so i installed older rod and re-adjusted but did maybe 350 mi that year, when i took it out this year on the highway noticed in 4th low rev was slipping so i downshifted and when i got off the highway the clutch felt funny and inspected the master was empty. replaced the plunger in the slave, there was a nic in the old rubber probably from sitting over winter, no more leak but slips now and then

I concur with jim the clutch slip could be pre load, maybe because the incorrect cylinder is bottoming out. if not then the plate has had it, fit new, and while you are at it fit the proper slave cylinder like Bibs says, it takes the guess work out, these cars are to highly strung to bolt any old bits on and they tend to let you know when you have :2guns:

Good luck

Why so much on a landrover slave cylinder?

I've fitted 3 £10 alloy slave cylinders off ebay on 3 different Esprits of varoius models from early S3T to the very last GT3s, know of 2 others who have them fitted and they are all working fantastically.

Not everything genuine Lotus is the best solution, it honestly is only a landrover part with Lotus markup.

As far as the measurement goes, I don't know, I just did it by feel on mine and its been perfect.

Hydraulics are pretty much self adjusting, if your slipping with no fluid after sitting up then I'd be looking at the plate and pressure plate.

If you were not releasing correctly and crunching gears then I'd look back at adjustment as you were not getting enough throw.

Those old £70 Lotus slave cylinders don't half rot with time, they should be a service item along with the chargecooler impellors :harhar:

There you go, no problem with fitting the right part with another brand stamped on it. .After all a lot of parts are donor from other manufactures. I was refering to the fact that in this case he states the part is dimensionally incorrect. and he is trying to make it work by altering the specified dimensions to suit. . Just because a part fits does not mean it is correct, there are many sublte design changes which are internal and although they may initally work ,they can have a long term detrimental effect.

We are all looking to save pennies on parts but do it wisely or it can cost you pounds.

Simon fitted a part which was original donor design and saved money. { he did his homework }

NOTE !!!!!!!!!

There are alloy slave cylinders on ebay being sold for esprits, they are dimensionally correct..... BUT.... the hydraulic connection is wrong. They need minor modification to insure correct fit and flow. By the time you have found this out and carried out mods. it would have been quicker and cheaper to buy the correct part in the first place.

CONCLUSION.........

Buy an original part as Bibs said or a qualified doner part as simon did. :animier:
