Front hub depth & upper links

Does anyone know the depth the S4 wheels have to be machined for it to fit on the wheel hub of a SE? I know it's 2mm in diameter difference, but the machine shop need to know the depth. I've trawled everywhere but this little gem of info is missing!

I imagine it's as far down as the grove for the centre cap:

JFYI here's the upper links to stop the rears wearing out!

These were bought at SJ's at a ridiculous price, not including the poly bushes (x4). Note the Lotus stickers, put on after the mod, meaning they are available from them direct but don't know the price.

Alternatively, have a look at Pitstoppete,s SE in the garage. He has done the same mod, but machined the hubs instead. I think you will find the depth measurement you require :D

Unfortunately he only gives the diameter he machined the hubs to, which is still useful! Looking at the picture of his hub it *looks* like I only need to go down as far as the groove that the centre cap fits, keeping the groove intact of course!

I will have another look around Alan. I am 99% sure I have seen these measurements somewhere? :D

Hi Alan.

Thought I may be able to help out with your problem. I have knocked up a little diagram to help explain things.

See Attachment:-

A: Is the diameter required to be machined, in your case you say this is an additional 2mm.

B: The depth required to be machined can be checked by measuring from the face of the hub to the top of the shoulder. Add another 5mm on to this just to be safe and to give a little clearance.

Hope this is of help to you.

I'd go out and measure this exactly on my car and tell you precisely whats needed, but as i'm still driving around in a fiesta I dont think it'd be much help!!!

Cheers for the help guys, much appreciated!

I've got the wheels back from the shop (South Cerney Engineering for those interested and in Wiltshire) and I got them to mill down to the groove the centre cap clips into. I've not test fitted it yet due to time but will over the holidays when I fit the upper links.

Alan....

Are you aware of the "PM" feature on the Forum?

On one of the user's info panes (or in their member info or garage perhaps) - wherever you see that PM, you can click on it and send that member a "Personal Message" it's a great way of asking someone specific a question (in this case Pitstop Pete perhaps?) as they may have missed the thread?

Thanks Robin, sent Pete a message!

As an update, here what's been going on. I had read that the wheels where to be opened up to 60mm in diameter which the machine shop did to the dot. Only it's 'just' not enough. I reckon I need another 0.5 to 1mm extra taken off. I managed to get one on, but not fully and it was as tight as a badgers bum:

My next problem are these damned upper links! The poly bushes that where bought at SJ along with the links, where not pressed in to the links, So I did this at work using a smooth jaw vice. I've since read the service notes and it says use special tool T000T0541 to put 'em in but can't find that in the spares book!

Any way, attempted to fit the links and where they fit to the chassis (as opposed to the hub carrier) there's not enough space, because the poly bushes are thicker. See the image below and you'll see what I mean.

post-215-1112458764.jpg

I just couldn't get it in there with the two snub washers in place. In the picture above I have about .25mm space, but need another 2mm or more to get the spacer in.

Options -

a. Perhaps I've not put the poly bushes in correctly and I need this tool T000T0541 to fit them correctly (can only imagine it's a tapered drift of some sort).

b. That I need a new smaller spacer that no one has documented and SJ forgot to tell me about...

c. That I need to 'adjust' part of the chassis to open up the gap sufficeintly to allow the parts in. By adjust I mean to beat it into submission! Not keen on doing that, bending part of the chassis that holds the top link in place, it would have to move 2mm.

Looks like another week with my wheels in the kitchen!

got yur pm chappy. sorry bout the wait, been round my mates place messing with an poorly lotus engine

if your boring the wheels, it needs to be bout 60.1-60.2mm

round the other way I wet and dry papered the paint out of the wheel bore to the machining marks at 58.1mm, the SE hubs ended up at 58mm spot on when i'd finished, what ever the step length of the hub plus 1mm is perfect if your boring the wheels out. I See thats what youve done, so maybe needs to be bigger to fit if machine shop only went for 60. try wet and dry paper on the hub diameter till it fits. sounds like its nearly there.

arm kits per pair were 115+the vodka and tonic from main dealer. dunno how that compares to sj.

rear poly bushes were from sj on mine. got ten as there the same as the front lower wishbone bush thats usually shagged too. mine fitted a treat, but you've gotta push them together lots then fit the inner spacer tube. i just got the smeg and rust off the mating area on the chassis, and it was fine. (2mm out sounds like a washer in the wrong place to me)

before that, I used long bolts through the inner spacers when they were on the bench, from an old link to the new ones to get the initial adjustment near perfect, eventually when i had it all set up, they were both 1 deg 20', now there 30', half a deg neg each side. lovely.

just for the record, an SE 60mm hub spigot is 19mm deep, just measured mine in the garage, so anyone machining there S4 wheels out need to take it down to 20mm from the mounting face

Sorry for the delay in replying, got a family crisis and busy making preperations for the trek up to Scotland (my ma's pretty ill).

On a happier note, I have my wheels on the car! Looks the business! Feels so MUCH better - control, smoothness, looks etc. I would recommend putting bigger and better wheels to anyone with an older Esprit.

Pete, you tip on sanding a bit off the hubs was a good 'un, saved me time taking the wheels to the machine shop again. Only needed to take a tiny bit off, didn't even go down to the rust marks!

I still haven't fitted the upper links as yet, I'm going to take them to Scotland with me and try to fit them up there. There aren't any spacers in the wrong place or anything, as I checked it in the parts book. I phoned up Steve at SJ's and what he says amazed me. Defending the poly bushes he sells, saying he has sold hundreds, some of which to do this very job and no one has called with this issue. I can't argue that :) . These new poly bushes are simply bigger. He says just grind off the excess of the face of the bushes :) that will give the extra few mil I need for them to fit. He says don't modify the car (by bending the bit of chasis the spacer mates to) which sounds like good advice to me!

Anyway, if anyone sees a blue SE with S4 wheels on the way or in and around Glasgow it'll be me!
