The red S3 is 'interesting'! N/a car with Turbo skirts, front & rear valences and tailgate louvres.

Has anyone else fitted louvres to a n/a car? I'd like to do it to mine but it seems to be a very complex job necessitating the replacement of all the engine panels as well.

My S3 had turbo Sills and Louvres fitted by the PO. The louvre was fitted in place of the glass and vented into the rear of the car. Very little water got in and there was no carpet trim so what little did just went to the drain holes at the rear quarters. If you wanted to do it 'proper' then there is indeed loads to do with changing the engine panels and lid.

Best thing to do is buy a rear hatch from a crashed turbo, remove the mating cowling for the engine cover, and swap for your glass backed tailgate. Then you can always put it back.

The sills require the sills of your S3 to be removed and then new turbo sills grafted on. The vents on them were cosmetic on mine - but i'm sure they could be made useful (ram air maybe?).

Is worth noting the E-bay car still has an S3 rear end. This is the hardest thing to do as the turbo's rear spoiler/light assembly does not simply 'bolt on'. You need to 'chop' off the rear of the S3 by a couple of inches, graft on a panel for the section to be fitted to, and then fit the turbo assembly. This is why it's the last job to be done when people retro fit turbo parts to an S3.

I figure the cost of all the work to be about 4-5 times the price difference

between an S3 and a turbo, so if you want the looks....

Cheers Paul. I would like to do the job properly and get all the interior panels too. I always felt that the Turbo was finished so much neater in this area, besides it would help to reduce the greenhouse temperatures in the cavity above the engine.

I've no desire to do the sills or valences and as for the rear end..... ! Well surely it would be more practical just to buy a Turbo!

How's Oxford these days? I used to be at RAF Abingdon (now Dalton Barracks). I remember the closure of the MG factory, and Williams occasionally testing their cars at the back of the airfield. The Head of the River, Browns...... happy days!!

I have been very tempted by the Turbo body kit but am resisting the urge. I figured that it would eventualy have a detrimental effect when coming to sell the car. I am trying to keep the car as original as possible but have chosen a non standard paint. Any other little changes will be peroid but easily removed and replaced with the original. The couple of things I have decided on changing I have boxed up the original parts and put them away in case the next owner wants to put it all back. Having said that I don't intend selling the S3 until I can replace it with either a Sport 300 or a late V8. Better get saving hard when I finnish this one me thinks :)
