De-Smogging a Federal

Jussi from Finland wants to know how to succesfully remove all the emission control stuff from his 84 Turbo (50 State Federal) When I got mine it was already removed( so I have no real details) Maybe someone like Mr. Tim Engle (from the U.S.) could explain how to accomplish this? Wayne 83 Turbo

Thanks WayneB again for your help :D

I'm also grateful if anyone can tell me where can I order spare parts for my Esprit.

I mean reliable shop who could also send items pretty fast to here in Finland.

And is there somekind of list where you can see what parts Esprit was made of, I mean what other car's parts. It would be very easy to buy some Toyota's parts even in here ;)

I took my car out of the garage B) it was over +10celsius...

And we checked this emission-control thing :) yep it's still in the car, cat and everything :D and now we really want to take them out!

So there might be plenty of work or what?

Here are some pictures I take, if someone can help us where we can start. Especially this sticker-picture, what we take off and what we shouldn't take off?

And what this A.C.U is?

Jussi, A.C.U. is the vacuum line that runs to the air conditioning unit control panel on your dash board(in front centre console)This is the line I suggested was detached which could be causing Jimmy Bondi and your lack of heat. Looking at your engine photos ,I can see the Air injection manifold is missing (injects air supplied by air pump on rear of engine into exhaust ports in the cylinder head) These manifolds rust out so probably why it was removed. I will take some good photos of my engine on saturday to outline more differences. Wayne 83 Turbo

Just found this http://www.lotusespritworld.com/EModificat...st_install.html

there is a modification to take the cat out. Showed this to my "mechanic" and he wondered why there have been left oxygen sensor? Isn't that needless after cat removing? Or are these photos from fuel injection engine, so can we take oxygen sensor out?

And Wayne, more pics please :)

Just wondering when we have enough gourage to take those emission stuff out...

So as you all know emission stuff is gone now :) I have two boxes extra parts from my car :D and never gonna put them back :D

Next project is to replace the cat with a straight pipe. Are there any "spare-part" for this, I mean if there's one available and it won't cost much it's easier to replace than make a new one ourselves.

I'm grateful any tips about taking the cat away. I have some "turbo-specialist" friends and they told to make the pipe from turbo to silencer as big as possibly.

It would be fun idea to put turbo's pipe other side of the car (without silencer) to make some afterburner effects :D hmm... ok just kidding.

just get a plain stainless steel tube to replace the cat. you're correct about wider is better. it will sound good too. either make it a bolt on, or weld it on to save weight/bulk. yes, you can weld stainless steel to carbon steel. you just have to use a special electrode.

did you remove the black metal vapor recovery tank from the fuel tank compartment, or did you just unhook it? if possible, make a diagram so we can all compare. thanks.

It's all here: http://www.glcforum.com/ukesprit/forums/in...p?showtopic=888

Catch tank is there like before and charcoal canister's pipe to the airpump is blocked.

Isn't there lambda sensor in the exhaust (or am i wrong)? Is it useless after cat removing. Or is it just so easy to replace cat and put the straigh pipe?

I'm going to wrap the whole exhaust-pipe with thermo-tape to reduce heat in the engine area.

Jussi have you still got pictures of my exhaust. You could always just put a straight pipe on the wastegate if you want a poping sound on the overrun( like works Audi Quattro rally cars) :D

Yep, I have those pictures you send :D

We were thinking to put the straight pipe on the wastegate but I'm afraid for risks :D There's fire risk !

We were thinking to make new lower spoiler (which is connected to rear bumper). Taking old spoiler to "specialist" who takes mold from it and makes same kind of hole left side of it like exhaust hole on the right side. It would look like original but with to holes B) Exhaust pipe right side and turbo's pipe left side.
