Bought a pair of Golf GTI MK11 gas struts for my S1 today and they fit perfectly. Tailgate closes and opens happily and stays open. Mine were £15 for the pair from ebay and there were many to companies to cheoose from. Takes two minutes to fit.

Read this post a few weeks ago and managed to purchase a pair of Golf struts at a local breakers for a huge £5.00 the pair, now fitted to my S3 and work perfectly.
