I suggest you check the relay hasn't welded itself in the "on" position and that the Otter switch hasn't got a short in it by pulling one of the wires off it.

Also check that you have the right type of relay in there. That relay has two sets of contacts which both close together ( to share the currrent ) so if you accidnetally put a Change-over relay in it will make the fans runs whether on or off.

I think the relay you need is double pole single throw. Most relays are single pole double throw which will switch the input between the two outputs but for that relay you need it to switch both outputs on and off in unison.

I was trying to get a new relay for my fans a while ago but none of the places I called had them so I ended up dismantling and cleaning up the old one.

It's a DPST relay as per cazna's reply so just check yours to be sure. The pin out's are as follows so check with a continuity tester or DVM on the ohms setting to see if it's OK. The only other relay like this on the 88 Esprit is the headlight High beam relay as far as I know. Try that one for a test. The ones with pin 87a are usually a change over SPDT relay and 87b are usually DPST, but best to check.

If that's not your issue, check the 12v supply to the relay coil pins 85 and 86, does it switch on and off or is it on all the time ? If it's on all the time take one of the wires off the otter switch and see if that stops the fans running. Also make sure your A/C switch is off as that can turn on the fans too.
