Removal of electric window motors

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to figure out how to remove the electric window motors from an 88 Turbo. It looks to be an impossible task without removing the entire door frame. Has anyone had similar experiences?

It looks too me like the mechanism wasn't designed with a view to being able to replace the motors easily.

It's not a fun job but not too bad. Not sure what year your car is and I've only done it on an S4 and S4s but I'm sure it's similar.

You have to remove the entire regulator assembly with motor attached and then get to the motor itself. Just a few bolts if I remember correctly and be careful when you take the glass loose. The arm on the regulator assembly is attached with a ball/socket joint to the u-channel that raises the glass. You can just pull the ball on the arm out of the plastic socket in the channel. Then remove a couple of bolts holding the motor frame to the door and work it out.

on my 90SE, the regulator assembly is held on with 3 nuts, 2 have to be removed and 1 loosened as the assembly is slotted on the bottom. I think I had to remove the nuts where the ground strap is attached as well

i've done it about 40 times, takes about 10 min now from door panel removal to regulator out. pretty easy

I think the 88 and 90 are the same

I bought this from http://www.diypowerwindowrepair.com

removed the arm from the Lotus unit (grind welds off), replaced the Volvo arm with the Lotus arm ($10 at local weld shop), bent to fit and installed

now they zoom up and down and I can get cheap replacement motors that are more efficient than the OEM (both are Bosch i think?)

I did have to relocated the screw holding in the ashtray to the right about 3/4" to prevent interference with gear

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

What I thought was going to be a difficult job has turned out to pretty easy. By drilling a hole in the fiberglass in front of the motor meant that I was able to get a socket onto the lower nut to loosen it sufficiently to get the regulator out.

Without an access hole, it make me wonder how Lotus managed to tighten the lower bolt when the car was built, as I can't see another way to get to it to tighten the nut.
