Have I ordered the right bulbs?

Recommended Posts

I've just ordered a set of 4 x 5+3/4"headlamps to convert from glow-worms to halogen on my S1 - if I ever finish it!! I had no idea what I was after as I've never even seen the lights work so I was led by the sales chap who gave me way too many options. Anyway I've ordered 4 sets of glass with 2 x H4 bulbs and 2 x H1 bulbs. I believe the H4 bulbs have a sidelight and main bulb inside them with 3 terminals on the back and go on the outsides of the Esprit. Then the H1 are single filament used for the inside lights which are main beam only. The H1 bulbs only have 1 contact on them, so there must be an earth on them somewhere as well. Does that sound correct?

I got the metalwork for fixing them to the car from a Triumph 2000 on the advice of another member.

Thanks, Paul.

Sounds about right. I just a few weeks ago converted my '86 from sealed beam to H4/H1 with standard Hella kits. The H4 is plug-n-play, but the H1 came with an additional wire to connect to the earth in the lead from the car...but my memory is a bit sketchy at the moment.

Anyway, the new setup works a treat and the improvement in seeing the road at night is AMAZING!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and 5-3/4" is the right size.

Paul,

Be very careful about the upgrade. Did you convert the high beams to a separate relay? Too much bulb wattage will fry the dip switch. Had to replace mine years ago because all the current runs through the switch. Typical Lotus design. Or perhaps poor Lucas design to be more accurate. I've run the same H1 / H4 in Cibie units since '77. Both are 60 watt max. Tried a 100 watt H1. Thats when I melted the switch.

Thanks for the replies. I am planning on fitting relays for all the lights and the electric windows if I ever get round to the wiring loom!! I was aware that the high beam goes directly through the switch on the steering column - not the best, so was planning on doing something about it.

I believe the single filament lamp with the extra wire is an H3. I did have the option of buying those instead of H1 but there didn't seem to be any advantages or disadvantages either way.

Cheers, Paul.
