After an eye-watering £1550 bill for a replacement head gasket I seriously am not feeling the love for the 1.8 K series! :veryangry: :veryangry:

To straight swap a 'yota for a 'yota is just over £3k-ish if you're lucky with availability, to convert would be no doubt more...

What might be more effective (and don't let Damian know I said this) would be to sell and buy a newer car. Would probably work out cheaper and now would be a good time to sell your car as it's just had a healthy bill for a head gasket replacement, something the new owner wouldn't have to worry about.

Would be far too much work Rache - the available space in the engine bay is less in the K series cars. If you're going to change then go for a Duratec or Audi, better still as Bibs says, sells yours & buy one already converted :)

*sniffle* I swore I'd never sell Damian, we're genetically bonded :D The first HG lasted 70k, the second only 20k but it was fitted by an MOT centre, so I question their expertise and workmanship. I should hope now that the new HG properly fitted by specialists, will last another 70k - and considering I only do 6k a year in Damian, should last me many a year.

Next thing to go will be the ruddy clutch I bet - definitely getting AA parts & Labour cover next year now!

£50 cheaper than I got charged for 'Tigger' last year! I suspect if your 2nd one only lasted 20k miles then they just replaced the head gasket with the thicker one that went in the Discovery without checking the piston liners. The numerous threads I have read on the subject indicate the liners wearing and dropping and so breaking the seal, is just as big a cause of HGF as the gasket itself actually failing. I really really hope that the garage you've just had you HGF done at again checked your liners and replaced then if they'd worn.

My HG has failed again after 18 months. Upgraded to MLS gasket and head skimmed and a PRRT fitted. This time it's an external leak around the gasket seal. Hope I have better luck the second time round.
