When I bought this project the bonnet hinges had been snapped off the bonnet. What's the best way to re attach them...... fibre glassing them in or glueing them in with something?

Did one a while ago on pete's TE. Several layers of glass did the job, and it's still attached.

Depends how it's snapped - as Dodgy said, any pics?

I also had the same problem and also wanted to reshape the profile of my bonnet to match the bodywork better. So I made a mould for the area where the hinges attached and replaced the original section of the bonnet...

Also, take off that nasty steel stiffener - there will be as much rust behind it as on the surface. They are big fat rivets though.

So how do you figure out where the bonnet brackets need to be bonded to? Ive tried glueing the brackets temporarily to the bonnet to try and offer them up to the hinges to see how accurately Ive guessed their location but they snapped off with the weight of the bonnet. If I glass them in permanently and theyre in the wrong place im Bu@@erd. Has anyone got their bonnet off currently and could measure where the bracket holes are in relation to the bonnet front?

Thanks

Phil

I could take mine of and do a sketch for you?

You could drop the bonnet off with me if you are passing and I'll have a look and see if I can rebuild it for you.

As a side note to anyone there is a Yellow S2 being broken on Ebay, I just got some lower wishbones from them.

The bonnet is off my S2 and hopefully should be going on soon - I can measure this weekend if you like?

C is the distance from the bottom edge of the bonnet to the centre of the lower bolts, mine has 3 very rusty ones and I was afraid to take them out as I'm not ready for another project just yet.

I took some measurements though using a 10mm socket and measuring up to the edge of (B) it and measuring the diameter of it (A) and came up with C = 15mm :ermm:Hinge.jpg

Could you not put wet pant the brackets when fitted on the hinges then lay the bonnet down the paint will then show you where the hinges go?

There's a hole where the paint will 'mark' the hinge. Also I think a bracket needs to go in before laying up the composite on top or it will be too weak to screw into.

Ok well ive got the brackets on the bonnet and even managed to bolt them to the hinges. I laminated them in like a bracket sandwich with GF on both sides then added a couple more layers once each one had dried. The only co##up was drilling through the bonnet whilst trying to clear one of the thread holes but thats easily sorted. I have removed the metal strip that runs across the underside as suggested and am derusting it before re attachment although I cant really see how much it helps anything.

Thanks for all the tips and advice Gents.
