Cam shaft end float?

Recommended Posts

Wondered if its ok to have some timming belt overhang on the cam sprockets?

Ive got .5 mil overhang on the inlet and 1.5 mil on the outlet sprockets.

If its not correct does anyone know how to adjust the camshaft end float?

Thanks

Mike

Mike, you control the camshaft end float on your engine with thrust washers bolted to the rear of the cams(located under the camshaft end covers). There should be about (0.001 to 0.008in) of end movement in the camshafts (not much). If your car is a high miler there is probably more than this amount. Dont think belt overhang is right , but engine will probably be o.k. with it like that( have you just bought car?) Wayne :)

Do they pulleys look worn? I thought the pulleys and belt were supposed to have a self centreing setup, or is that just the alter HTD type?

Just pulled it out the garage after 3 years in iraq. The pulleys look good and the belt sits with lots to spare on the other pulley but hangs on the cam pulleys.

I will take a look at it when i see the car tommorow.

The engine has just had new piston rings and a belt tensioner. I fitted a new interior when i first got it.

Hope to have the engine started for the first time tommorow and then Get the new custom exhaust fitted next week.

Im having 2 twin exits made on the exhaust.

Thanks for your info guys.

Hi Mike

Overhang of the belts may be a problem down the line when the edge of the camshaft sprocket starts to wear the belt, possibly pulling it even more out of line.

I don't think its right to overhang, on both the car I had and the car I have now they did not / don't.

Are you shore that the sprockets are on the way they should be that is to say with the dot in the side of the sprockets facing forward? if not this would put the sprockets out of line.

More stuff to check, loose crank pulley (allowing belt to move forwards) Or excessive crankshaft endfloat( get underneath car, look to see if pulley mooves forwards when somebody operates clutch) After a 3 yr lay up, you should be changing the belt( I would) Good Luck ,Wayne :)
