Radiator fans

Recommended Posts

I finaly got my engine started but the cooling fans wont kick in?

Ive had to fit a switch in the car so i can turn them on myself.

There is a new set of rad fans fitted as the old ones had seized and i have tried fitting several new temp switches.

Also headlights work ok on the switch but if i flash the lights on the colum they stay up and only go down if i turn the side lights on.

Any ideas where the problems might be?????

Thanks

Mike

Funnily enough I spent Saturday working out why my radiator fans weren't working. The wiring loom in my car is non standard and it has been rebuilt in the past so it was taking ages to identify which wires/relays were related. After a lot of time without result I decided to start from scratch and completely install a brand new relay and completely rewire the fans using a spare fuse socket in the fusebox.

Having blown the head gasket once due to an overheat I thought this was the best option rather than relying on 26 yr old wiring and bits. Took about

Regards

Mat

I am putting all my wiring back in to my S3 and the wiring is a joke. I have split most of the components onto individual fuses so that when one thin causes the fuse to blow it doesn't take out a dozen other things in the process. As I am re-installing the loom I am checking every connection. The amount of broken and corroded connections was incredable, I suppose it is to be expected from a 23 year old car. Anyway besides doing continuity test using a multi meter I also purchased a power probe. You can connect the power probe up to a battery and using a button on the tool you can apply a positive or negative/earth to a wire or component to see what the problm is. It is an excellent tool and if you are having electrical problems it is worth every penny.

Guys

Quick question - I have just rebuilt my 82 Turbo and am not sure if the fans are working correctly - when i turn on the ignition all the fans (3) start working straight away.

Should this happen or should these work off of the temperature switch - otter switch?

Thanks

No, the fans should only come on when the temperature is high.

There are probably 2 reasons why there are continually

1) the otter switch is stuck on or the relay is stuck on.

2) the PO had wired them on due to a problem or there is an overide switch which you haven't found.

Did the fans work OK before fitting the new ones?

Guys thanks

I found the connections on the otter switch to be in a very bad state.

I remade them and this fixed the problem - when i short the switch out the fans come on so all is fine.

Thanks again.

i love this car but its worse than marriage!!!!!!!!!!!!
