Window mechanism

Recommended Posts

Just cruising the whole weekend B) but we have time to study the window mechanism. I have a problem with passenger side window, sometimes it goes over the window frame. So we decided to take a look:

door.jpg

Those "rollers" are broken and it may affect the window behaviour :P

Here's closer pic from those rollers:

Where we can find spare parts, I remembered that window-mechanism is from some familiar car, but can't remember from what :(

Now we took the "rollers" and that bar (lower picture) away, is there a risk the window will fall :P

Well, two weeks ago i was out playing with some TVR Cerberas and an Ultima

(sorry guys, but nothing lotus was on that weekend and i needed to shed some

rubber and lose some fuel :( ), some pictures of the day here:

http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/clarkycat...t2000/my_photos

Anyhow...

On one stop, when i shut the door, the door glass broke in my face :P

Cut my face and hands a bit, and stang some. I was a bit raw so knocked up

the pub we were parked outside and the girls let me in to pull the glass out of

my face and arms, and to mop up the blood (surprising amount as the wounds

were all dead small like paper cuts, cleaned up i didn't look too ghastly).

The TVR and Porsche guys borrowed a hoover from the pub and got most of the

glass out of my car (was EVERYWHERE), although the door itself was still full and

wherever i stopped it came out of the holes in the bottom of the door, so i scooped

it up and chucked it behind the seat (ended up with half the pubs gravel carpark

by the time we did our last burn).

The rub of this is when i took the door apart, it Seems the reason this happened is

those SAME LITTLE WHEELS AS YOURS being broken and the guide coming off the

rail as i shut the door. So be very careful mate. I was looking forward as i

shut the door, had i been looking right, i'd be having glass pulled out my eyes.

I made a temporary repair: http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/clarkycat...t2000/my_photos

Let me know about them wheel, as apparently the whole assembly is discontinued

so we might be chasing our own tails!!!! :P

Jussi/ Paul, the parts to fix this are Carriage Plate Wheel D036B0433Z (plastic guide wheel) Wheel Pivot Shoulder Pin B079U4265F (pin that holds wheel to plate) Wheel Pivot Washer A075W4000Z (Think its pressed on to pin to retain wheel) I am pulling off the door trim panels off my Esprit tommorow , and lubricating the heck out of the wheels and sliders. On your cars did the wheels break because they seized to the pins? Paul,it looks like being showered with Triplex is no fun :P

Just ducktaped the window just in case.

Now we are considering to take those "rollers" to local turner. If he could lathe from nyloc 8pieces, I think that's the best solution. Today we were at local car stripper bay to find suitable rollers, we find that Audi 100's window-rollers were very near to those Esprit ones.

Be careful Wayne! After you have drinked that bottle, it may affect your windows. Have you remembered to fasten every bolt, that there isn't possibility the window to fall :P

We took "rollers" to local turner and bought 1meter nyloc-bar. Turner makes from that nyloc-bar 8rollers, they will be ready by next friday, cost is about 50-60euros+nyloc-bar 20euros. Will take some photos when they are ready.

For that time will you Wayne send to me samekind of bottle "to hold the window", it's important that it's full :P

Do you know I haven't even looked at the condition of mine will have a check on that tomorrow. But what I did find was that at some stage the bracket holding the electric motor in place had snaped and had been rewelded. Now whoever did this repair was to bloody lazy to remove the window lift mechanism and had done it in situe and just welded the brackets together. When I stripped them out I seperated them and repaired them properly.

I now have to try and repair my window surround as it has snapped where it fixes to the door skin. I did ask a Welder if he could do it but he said to me that if I gave it to him he would proberbly only bond it together using an epoxy glue because it would more than likely distort and stop the glass from going up and down smoothly. So he suggested than I get some glue and do it myself and save myself a large bill for such a small job. I was very impressed at how honest he was, it took me quite by suprise.

Troy, I reckon the aluminium door frame could be welded succesfully by someone with a Tig welder. Another way (not as neat) is a product called Aladin which is an aluminium solder (applied with heat from a butane torch) That would be a more lasting repair than epoxy. :P

I bought some of that stuff at the kitcar show the other weekend over here it's called Lumiweld. Looks good but I haven't tried it yet.

Troy, thats the stuff, Lumiweld. It can be a bit tricky to use(practise on scrap first)You have to get area to be soldered scrupilously clean( with only a stainless steel wire brush) You will have to grind or file finished "weld" to get it looking good. That stuff has got me out of the sh1t a few times! :P

Now the window is working properly B) Get parts from turner last friday and total cost was 60euros (40e turner job and 20e for nyloc-bar). We rapaired co-driver's side only, I have 4rollers for driver's side also but we don't repaired them yet, cause window is working pretty good at the moment.

We also put some grease on those rollers and silicone for window-rails. Window works very smoothly now

I have a strange feature on those window-buttons. Driver's side window goes up when you press button up, co-drivers side goes down when you press button up. And those buttons are right way up :) is it something with wires or where...

Jussi, the window control swtches have the word window at the bottom of the switch at the top is a green band for drivers side and a red band for pass side. If they are already like this the wires have gotten switched around. As there are only 2 wires going to each power window motor ,just switch them over at the bullet connector by the motor that is the problem.

Both sides the text window is top side of the switch.I remembered that this text is upside down, so is it that there is just one left switch for both sides?

So can we switch the wires on switches side?

  • 2 months later...

I built the guide bar, carrier with wheels from scratch for our project S1. The wheels I got from a local fly screen door maker. They were cheap and have a ball bearing in the middle.

BTW the guide bar the rollers run on should not be greased as this causes the wheels to slide rather than turn which results in them seizing.
