Hi mate,

Just had the same problem on my turbo. There is a wire coming from the coil to some where; bur it is connected using one of those blocks. I replaced it on the weekend and now it is OK. I'll send a pic. later.

Marc , sorry to hear car is infested with electrical Gremlins. :P The distributor caps are a bit of a sloppy fit(aftermarket caps can be worse) I would deff check out low voltage side of coil circuit with a multimeter. Old wires (especially in engine compartment) can become brittle from exposure to heat and oil . Although they look O.K.ish on the outside , internally the wire is broken and has no continuity. A realy bad wire for this is the one from the coil to the distributor. Also the wiring in the distributor (to the baseplate , which has to move) suffers greatly.I think a clue to this is the rev-counter not working. As your car is nearly 30 yrs old , you are going to get this stuff hapening :P

Sorry to hear u have yet more problems......

I had exactly the same thing on my old 205 gti and it was as the others have suggested a loose wire on the coil, caused a very interesting moment overtaking a car going up a hill with a car coming in the opposite direction, what was a safe gap very soon closed up!!! :P

Your rev counter is also supplied by from the same terminal on the coil so thats why you get both problems at once.

Hope you manage to sort it. :P
