Quick Air Filter Question...

Recommended Posts

I replaced my K&N today with a WIX paper filter but I was unsure which way it went. Its seems from Kato's site that the "veins" point away from the engine and out of the airbox, but this is counterintuitive. Which way is correct?

Hi Lucas ,

Thats the way my filter was fitted to my gt3 .

Makes sense as you dont want the element sucked into the turbo.

But ........, Why change from the KnN ?

Are you answering my question with a riddle?

I did away with the K&N for peace of mind.

I just don't think the risks are worth the reward, that's all.

I think what people are asking is... What risks? What's wrong with K&N's cos it's news to us this side of the pond!!!

I haven't seen any downside on using K&N filters and I've been doing so for 15 years. Good stuff, reusable and work fine WHEN PROPERLY OILED!!! I think there is some information out there about people having filter problems with them but I'll bet they are not used properly. I've never had any failures with them and I know I've got at least 350-400k of miles on cars/bikes using K&Ns. Got one on the Lotus too.

I just can't see how they can both filter as well as a paper filter and let more air in. Seems like it's one or the other to me.

I bought one for a Honda years ago cos it was the thing to do, but I never felt comfortable about it. I just feel better with a paper filter.

Whlie I was messing with it a made the "ram air" mod, and boy does that make a lot of noise! :-)

Ahhh yes the whoosh flutter of the forced induction and the wastegate - it rules!:D

There was a very lengthy post on Yahoo (ukesprit) about K&Ns a while back including a reply from someone at K&N itself about how the work and tests and included stats and particle denstiy this that and the other.... see if the search tool actually FINDS it :D

Just to add my 2p worth of thoughts on this.

The particle density stopped by a typical paper element over the style used by K&N is the same if not finer for K&N.

As to how it flows better air, design simply. K&N specialise in flowing air through ther filters, it's all they really do. The average car designer goes, err, paper, air thats close enough.

Also cost of manufacturing a paper elements is generally cheaper which for a motor manufacturuer is the base line for anything they do.

Final issue would be patents and thats why K&N may be the only ones doing filters the way they do.

Been using K&N's on engines for as long as I have been mucking around with them, highly tuned as well as standard high mileage engines. Never had a problem and love the whoosh, flutter of a good Ram-Air mod.
