another problem to add to my list if anyone has any idea,

temperature guage is sometimes sitting just above 50 degrees. obviously too low. but the fans do cut in if i leave it running while it is on 50 degrees. engine temp seems fine. but then im no mechanic!

i wouldnt think it could be thermostat because the fans a cutting in as i say. think it minght just be the guage playing silly buggers?

Does sound like the gauge.

Freescan would pick this up as it has a 'Coolant Temp' data column.

I had this problem on my S4s and it turned out to be the temp sender unit screwed into the pipework near the thermostat.

If your fans are cutting in and out Ok then this is likely to be the culprit, as the ECU isn't seeing a fault so no check engine light just a dodgy reading on the gauge.

If you look at the bit of ali pipe that houses the thermostat you'll see a single wire going to a small threaded unit off to the side

THAT'S IT

That's what failed on mine and caused my gauge to never read more than 70

No need to drain. You'll lose some water but nothing that can't be topped up afterwards.

Forgot.

Just be very careful taking it out, it's on a taper thread and (can) shear.

also when you put the new one in make sure it's threaded in properly and not crossed at all, the thread is quite fine.

But where is the sensor that the ECU senses the water temp from and controls the fans?

Hi Jez and hpe you and the lrg beast are well.

a bit of a hectic time for me at the mo, (year 11's leaving in 2 weeks, exams just after).

There is a chap who seems very keen om black beauty, who has done his homework well, and is looking at a few that are supposed to be nice examples. So far he has been disappointed at what else he has seen, so its looking promising. He is seeing another this weekend and hopefully will be making a decision one way or the other soon after. Just about to do the C service on it and ordered a new exhaust downpipe.

The s4s is running again!, but feels down on power (not getting full boost), and will be looking at it at half term.

More problems with the normal cars - cam belt snapped on laguna (oh dear I said!!), and a cracked gearbox casing on the vectra. oh well, no use complaining just get on with it.

Have the same prob on my S4. Gauge reads no higher then 45c. And in the last day the Oil pressure gauge has gone bananas. Works, stops, works, stops etc etc

The TCS for the ECU is located behind the chargecooler pump. above the starter and screwed into the inlet manifold, just replaced mine due to going open circuit and overfuelling (loads of black smoke) and poor hot starting. One hell of a difference, think may have been reading incorrect for ages.

My S4S did the same. I replaced the Sender but the problem was the gauge. I've noticed that if you have a bad sensor and a good gauge, your temp usually does not read beyond a certain point, but if you have a bad gauge, and a good sender, the gauge will fluctuate a specific temp up&down depending on the actual temp. Mine read 10 degrees cooler at all times.

This is not a proven science, but just a theory....

If the sender unit outputs a voltage to the temp gauge, has anyone with a good gauge reading ever taken any voltage treadings for cold and normal operating temp?

We might have a better idea from reading that we can take of ours
